Albany Business Signs

Albany is a city located in the southwestern region of the present-day U.S. state of Georgia.  Prior to incursions by citizens of the United States, this area was inhabited by the Creek peoples.  They named it ‘Thronateeska’, after the flint found in the river.  By 1836, the Creek had been forcibly removed to “Indian Territory” west of the Mississippi River.  By this point, settlement by the United States began with Nelson Tift, from Groton, Connecticut.  Tift took land along the Flint River in October of 1836.  Tift named his new settlement Albany, after Albany, New York as they were both located at the navigable heads of rivers.  Albany, Georgia was officially incorporated into a city on December 27th, 1838.
