Ann Arbor is a city located in the southern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan. Prior to incursions by citizens of the United States, this area was inhabited by the Potawatomi and Ojibwa peoples. The settlement of Ann Arbor, Michigan itself was first founded in 1824 by land speculators John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey. Allen and Rumsey named the settlement after their wives, who were both named Ann, and “for the stands of Bur Oak” residing within the 640 acres of land they had just purchased. Ann Arbor, Michigan was officially charted into a city in 1851.
Today, according to a 2016 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan has a total population of 120,782 people. This makes it the sixth most populous city in the entire state of Michigan. As for Ann Arbor, Michigan’s metropolitan area, according to that same 2016 estimate, it has a total population of 344,791 people.
While modern day Ann Arbor, Michigan has one major economic engine (that of the University of Michigan), the city is home to various tech firms such as Arbor Networks, Arbortext, JSTOR, MediaSpan, Truven Health Analytics, ProQuest, All Media Guide, Weather Underground, Zattoo, Internet2, and the Merit Network.
Additionally, Ann Arbor, Michigan serves as the home of several research and engineering centers such as Lotus Engineering, General Dynamics, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory, and the Toyota Technical Center.
Other than these firms and research centers (and of course the university), Ann Arbor, Michigan boasts several cultural bastions. These include the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, the Arbor Opera Theater, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Ballet Theater, the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet, The Ark, and Performance Network Theatre. Ann Arbor, Michigan is also the home of The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library.
Of course, Ann Arbor, Michigan’s main attraction (and claim to fame) is undoubtedly the University of Michigan. Originally, when this university was established in 1817, it was located in Detroit, Michigan and known as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania. However, the institution which would eventually become the University of Michigan eventually moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The modern-day University of Michigan is a public research university, and is, in fact, considered one of the premier research universities found in the United States. As of 2017, the University of Michigan’s endowment was a whopping $10.9 billion, with 44,718 total students enrolled into its various programs.
The University of Michigan NCAA Division I – Big Ten Wolverines have won a combined 20 national championship team titles unrecognized by the NCAA. Eleven of these unrecognized titles came from the football team. The Football Wolverines play their home games at Michigan Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 107,601 people. This makes it the largest stadium in the United States, and the second largest stadium in the world (and the 34th largest sports venue). The Michigan Wolverines other athletic teams have earned a combined 36 other, NCAA recognized, National Team Titles (the largest amount (12) coming from the Swim Teams).
