Athens, Georgia – General Information

Athens is a city located in the northeastern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Georgia. Prior to European explorations, this area had been inhabited for many hundreds of years by native people. However, in 1540 Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto traveled through the region and not long after, local native society fell out of prominence.

By the late 18th century, a trading settlement called Cedar Shoals had been established on the banks of the Oconee River. This settlement would soon be changed forever. The Georgia General Assembly granted a charter for the University of Georgia as the first state-supported University on January 27th, 1785. John Milledge, one of the University’s trustees and later Governor of Georgia, donated even more land to the school, and he was responsible for naming its surroundings after Athens in Ancient Greece, which had once been home to the Platonic Academy of philosophers Plato and Aristotle. Athens, Georgia was officially incorporated into a town in December of 1806.

Today, Athens, Georgia has been consolidated into the city-county of Athens-Clarke County. According to a 2010 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, Athens-Clarke County has a total population of 116,714 people. This makes it the sixth most populous city in the state of Georgia. Athens, Georgia also serves as the principal city of the Athens-Clark County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to that same 2010 estimate, this metropolitan area has a total population of 192,541 people.

Athens, Georgia’s economy is dominated by the education, technology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. The city has the honor of serving as the headquarters for companies such as Docebo, Roundsphere, Cogent Education, Partner Software, Peachtree Medical Billing, Digital Insight, and Merial and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The city is also home to independent publisher Hill Street Press.

Athens, Georgia is most famous as the home and birthplace of the University of Georgia, however. Founded in 1785 as Franklin College, the University of Georgia is now a pubic land-grant, Regional Sun Grant, National Sea Grant, and National Space Grant research university. According to a 2017 estimate by U.S. News & World Report, the University of Georgia is ranked tied for 18th overall among all public universities. In 2016, the university had a $1.017 billion endowment with 2,999 academic staff and 36,130 students enrolled in total for the Fall 2015 semester. Interestingly, the North Campus of the University of Georgia, featuring many buildings in the federal, classical, and antebellum architectural styles, is considered a U.S. Historic District and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Athens, Georgia also features the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, which consists of 313 acres. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is operated by the University of Georgia. This garden contains eleven botanical and horticultural collections.
