Bethesda is a city located in the southwestern region of the present-day U.S. state of Maryland. Prior to occupation by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Piscataway tribe. The first European to explore this area was English fur trader Henry Fleet, who arrived in 1623. Later on, in 1694, Henry Darnall was awarded a 710-acre land grant, and thus a settlement was born. By 1862, this settlement was referred to as “Darcy’s Store, in honor of an owner of a local establishment. However, in 1871, the new postmaster, Robert Franck, renamed the settlement ‘Bethesda,’ in honor of Bethesda Meeting House, which was a local Presbyterian Church. These meeting house was itself named after Jerusalem’s Pool of Bethesda. (Bethesda means “House of Mercy” or “House of Kindness.”)
