Bethesda is a city located in the southwestern region of the present-day U.S. state of Maryland.  Prior to occupation by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Piscataway tribe.  The first European to explore this area was English fur trader Henry Fleet, who arrived in 1623.  Later on, in 1694, Henry Darnall was awarded a 710-acre land grant, and thus a settlement was born.  By 1862, this settlement was referred to as “Darcy’s Store, in honor of an owner of a local establishment.  However, in 1871, the new postmaster, Robert Franck, renamed the settlement ‘Bethesda,’ in honor of Bethesda Meeting House, which was a local Presbyterian Church.  These meeting house was itself named after Jerusalem’s Pool of Bethesda.  (Bethesda means “House of Mercy” or “House of Kindness.”)

Today, according to a 2013 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Bethesda, Maryland has a total population of 63,374 people.  Additionally, Bethesda, Maryland is also considered a principal city of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.  According to a 2013 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area has a total population of 9,331,587 people.  This makes it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Bethesda, Maryland is home to a number of vital national medical institutions.  These institutions include the National Institute of Health’s main campus.  The National Institute of Health, which formed in 1887, “is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research.”  It is part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.  Elsewhere in Bethesda, Maryland sits Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, which was founded in 1940, includes Bethesda Naval Hospital Tower.  Bethesda Naval Hospital Tower is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  Walter reed is “the United States’ top tri-service military medical center…and one of the most prominent U.S. military medical centers in the Washington, D.C.” area.  This center was named after yellow fever researcher Walter Reed.  “In 2011, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)…was combined with the National Naval Medical Center to form the tri-service Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.”

As for other aspects of Bethesda, Maryland’s economy, the city serves as the location for the headquarters of several notable companies.  These companies include AdvisorShares, Calvert Investments, Cambridge Information Group, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Coventry Health Care, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, HMSHost, Honest Tea, Host Hotels & Resorts, the International Neuroethics Society, Lockheed Martin, Marriott International, Ritz Carlton, RLJ Companies, United States Enrichment Corporation, Youth for Understanding USA, Wellness Corporate Solutions, and Digital Management, Inc.  Interestingly, while software company Bethesda Softworks was founded in Bethesda, Maryland (clearly), it is no longer located there – its offices were moved to Rockville, Maryland, in 1990.
