Beverly Hills Business Signs

Beverly Hills is located in Los Angeles County, California. The area of Southern California, which would eventually become Los Angeles, was historically the home of the Chumash and Tongva peoples.  The first European to visit the Beverly Hills area was Gaspar de Portola on August 3, 1769.

The City of Beverly Hills claims Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband were responsible for the first European settlement in the area: the 4,500 acres (18 square kilometer) Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas, which was settled in 1828.  Henry Hammel and Andrew H. Denker acquired this ranch in the late nineteenth century, where they used it as a lima bean farm.

In 1900, the Rodeo Land and Water Company took over the property.  Originally, they were looking for oil but could not process the oil with the technology of the time.  They did, however, discover water, and decided to found a town in the region instead.  So in 1906, they renamed the area after Beverly Farms in Beverly, Massachusetts and the hills in the area.  Beverly, Massachusetts was named after the town of Beverly in the east of England.  This town derived its name from “Bevreli or Beverlac”, which was old English for beaver-lake or beaver clearing, which was “a reference to the colonies of beavers in the nearby River Hull during the 10th century.”

The town of Beverly Hills, California was officially incorporated on January 28th, 1914.  Today, according to a 2013 US Census Bureau estimate, Beverly Hills has a population of 34,658 people.  Beverly Hills is also part of the Greater Los Angeles Area.  The Greater Los Angeles Area, according to a 2014 estimate, has a population of 18,550,288 people, which makes it the second largest metropolitan area in the country, following the New York metropolitan area.  The Greater Los Angeles Area is one of the largest urban agglomerations in the world.

Beverly Hills, of course, is world famous as the home for many actors and other celebrities.  However, Beverly Hills isn’t just about the celebrities.  In fact, the town is home to one Fortune 500 company: Live Nation Entertainment.  On top of this, Beverly Hills also serves as the headquarters for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and the LA-area offices of Aeroflot and El Al.  According to Beverly Hills’s 2009 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the area is The Beverly Hilton, responsible for 1,093 jobs.

The most iconic hotel in Beverly Hills has to be The Beverly Hills Hotel, often called The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows.  Located on Sunset Boulevard, it is one of the world’s most recognizable hotels.  The Beverly Hills Hotel was established in May 1912 and first owned by Margaret J. Anderson and her son Stanley S. Anderson.  It was designed by architect Elmer Grey in the Mediterranean Revival style.

Beverly Hills is also well known for its high end shopping districts such as Rodeo Drive.  Other landmarks in the area include Beverly Gardens Park, Beverly Hills City Hall, Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden, Greystone Mansions, Greenacres, La Cienega Park, Pickfair, and Will Rogers Memorial Park.  Additionally, Beverly Hills has been featured in many films and TV shows.
