Biloxi Business Signs

Biloxi’s beachfront lies directly on the Mississippi Sound, with barrier islands dripping off the United States coast into the Gulf of Mexico.  Prior to European discovery and conquest, this area had been inhabited by the Biloxi peoples for thousands of years.  Their name, of course, is what gave the area – and eventually the city – its name.  In 1697, the French Minister of Marine, Comte de Pontchartrain, ordered Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d’lberville to locate the mouth of the Mississippi.  lberville and his men landed on North America’s mainland at present-day Biloxi on February 13th, 1699.  Iberville created a permanent settlement here called Fort Maurepas.  Following British victory in the Seven Years’ War, France was forced to cede the area to their colonial rivals in 1763.  British rule persisted until 1779, when the Spanish took over.  In 1811, the Biloxi area became part of the United States in what was then referred to as Mississippi Territory.  Mississippi was accepted as an official state within the Union in 1817.  It wouldn’t be until 1838, however, when Biloxi was incorporated as a township.

Today, the city of Biloxi, according to a 2012 estimate by the US Census Bureau, has a total population of 44,578 people.  This makes it the fifth most populous city in the state of Mississippi.  Prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Biloxi had the third largest population in the state, but that population rapidly decreased following the storm.  Biloxi is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area.  According to that same 2012 estimate, the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area has a total population of 379,582 people.

Biloxi’s economy is dominated by the casino and gaming industries.  In fact, the city is home to a number of casinos including the IP Casino Resort & Spa, Golden Nugget Biloxi, Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, Boomtown Casino, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Harrah’s Gulf Coast, Treasure Bay Casino, and Palace Casino Resort.

The city of Biloxi has been home to Keesler Air Force Base since 1941.  Today, Keesler Air Force Base is controlled by the United States Air Force and is part of Air Education and Training Command (AETC).  The base was named in honor of aviator 2d Lt Samuel Reeves Keesler, Jr., who was a Mississippi native killed in action in France during World War One.  The 81st Training Wing is currently garrisoned at this base.

Biloxi’s most famous landmark is Biloxi Light, which is a lighthouse sitting directly adjacent to the Mississippi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico.  First lit in 1848, Biloxi Light is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a Mississippi Landmark.  Perhaps most interestingly, Biloxi Light “has been kept by female [lighthouse] keepers for more years than any other lighthouse in the United States.”  Another fascinating landmark of note in the Biloxi area is the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, which was established in 1989.  The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is “dedicated to the ceramics of George E. Ohr, [who lived from 1857 to 1918 and who called himself] the ‘Mad Potter of Biloxi.’”

Biloxi is home to a few sports franchises.  Southern League Baseball’s Biloxi Shuckers, who are a Double-A farm team of MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers, play their home games at MGM Park.  They have one division title to their names.  Louisiana Premier League’s Biloxi City Futbol Club began play in the autumn of 2016.  The city of Biloxi also hosted the 2009 Women’s World Military Cup.  The most famous sport Biloxi is famous for, though, is that of sportsfishing.  It is so famous for its abundance of spotted seatrout, red drum, Spanish & king mackerel, flounder, snapper, grouper, and sharks that fisheries biologists have nicknamed the area ‘The Fertile Fisheries Crescent.”
