Bloomington is a city located in the central-eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Minnesota.  Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by members of the Ojibwa people and Mdewakanton Dakota.  Peter and Louisa Quinn were the first settlers of European descent to arrive in the area in 1843.  Eventually, the settlement the Quinns began came to be known as Bloomington, after Bloomington, Illinois.  Bloomington, Minnesota was officially incorporated into a town in 1858 and then, eventually, into a city in 1960.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Bloomington, Minnesota has a total population of 85,319 people.  This makes Bloomington the fourth most populous city in the state of Minnesota and the 377th most populous city in the country.  Interestingly, Bloomington, Minnesota is also considered part of the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area.  According to that same 2016 estimate, the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area has a total population of 413,651 people.  This makes it the most populous city in the state of Minnesota.  Additionally, this also makes the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area the 46th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.
