Boca Raton is a city located along the southeastern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Florida’s protuberance. Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by various native groups for four thousand years and then subsequently inhabited by the Tequesta peoples for two thousand years. Due to a combination of Spanish biological warfare and conflict with the neighboring Calusa during the 16th century, the Tequesta were soon to disappear forever. This area was then taken over by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Confederate States of America, then the United States yet again.
As for the city of Boca Raton, Florida, itself, this settlement began a little to the south of its present location, but due to a mapmaking error, it is now located within “Boca Ratone Sounde.” The settlement’s first location was called Boca Raton by Spanish explorers because, in Spanish, “Boca Raton” roughly translates to “a shallow inlet of sharp-pointed rocks which scrape a ship’s cables.” The first settler to arrive in Boca Raton, Florida’s new location was Captain Thomas Moore Rickards in 1895. The city’s population rapidly expanded after Henry Flagler expanded the Florida East Coast Railway, which connected West Palm Beach to Miami. Boca Raton, Florida was officially incorporated on May 26th, 1925.
Today, according to a 2014 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Boca Raton, Florida has a total population of 214,027 people. Additionally, Boca Raton, Florida is also considered a principal city in the Miami metropolitan area. According to a 2015 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the Miami metropolitan area has a total population of 6,012,331 people. The Miami Metropolitan area is the eighth largest metropolitan area in the United States and the 67th largest metropolitan area in the world.
Boca Raton, Florida is a city bustling with business. Boca Raton, Florida was even once home to an IBM manufacturing plant which would eventually become the place where Bill Gates “signed his historic deal to supply IBM with the Microsoft MS-DOS operating system for its personal computer line.”

The Town Center Mall is “an upscale super-regional shopping center” which also happens to be “the largest enclosed and conventional shopping mall within Palm Beach County, and second largest by square feet in South Florida.” Additionally, Boca Raton, Florida also boasts Mizner Park, which is described as a “lifestyle center” positioned within the city’s downtown area. Mizner Park features several retail outlets, housing, a movie theater, and The Center for the Arts at Mizner Park. This center includes the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Count de Hoernele Amphitheater.
