Breckenridge Business Signs

Breckenridge is located in the north-central portion of the current U.S. state of Colorado.  Prior to incursions by citizens of the United States, this area was used by the nomadic Ute peoples as a summer hunting ground.  By the 1850s, however, this land was considered part of Utah Territory.

In 1859, during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, General George E. Spencer officially created the town of “Breckinridge.”  Originally, the town was named after John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, who was the 14th Vice President of the United States.  It is believed General Spencer wished to flatter the government in order to gain a post office for the town.  This plan worked.  In fact, “Breckinridge’s” post office became the first of its kind between the Continental Divide and Salt Lake City, Utah.  However, when the American Civil War began, the former Vice President sided with the Confederates (he even became a Confederate Brigadier General!).  The citizens of “Breckinridge” were pro-Union, so they decided to change the town’s name – “Breckinridge” became Breckenridge.  The town of Breckenridge, Colorado was officially incorporated on March 3rd, 1880.

Today, according to a 2010 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, Breckenridge, Colorado has a total population of 4,540 people.  This makes it the most populous municipality in Summit County, Colorado.  Breckenridge, Colorado also serves as Summit County, Colorado’s county seat.  While the official population of Breckenridge, Colorado is four and a half thousand people, many citizens of Breckenridge argue it has many part-time residents, due to the fact that many people have vacation homes in the area.

Breckenridge, Colorado sits at the base of the Tenmile Range.  The Tenmile Range is an extension of the Mosquito Range, which itself is part of the Rocky Mountains.  Tenmile’s highest point is considered to be Quandary Peak, which has an elevation of 14,265 ft (4,348 m).

While, of course, Breckenridge, Colorado’s largest industry was once mining, it is now that of tourism.  One of Breckenridge, Colorado’s most popular modern day tourist destinations is undoubtedly Breckenridge Ski Resort, which first opened on December 16th, 1961.  Breckenridge Ski Resort consists of 155 runs in total, with a top elevation of 12,998 ft (3,962 m).  Perennially, Breckenridge Ski Resort is thought of as one of the most visited ski resorts in the western hemisphere.

Aside from skiing and other winter and summer outdoor sports and activities, Breckenridge, Colorado is also known for the many events it holds throughout the year.  At the beginning of each year, Breckenridge, Colorado hosts the International Snow Sculpture Championships, “where sculptors from around the world compete to create works of art from twenty ton blocks of snow.”
