Cambridge Business Signs

Cambridge is a city located in the eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Massachusetts.  Prior to incursions by those of European ancestry, this area was inhabited by the Pennacook peoples.  Cambridge, Massachusetts was first established by Thomas Dudley, his daughter Anne Bradstreet, and her husband Simon in December of 1630.  Initially, the settlement was called Newe Towne, but eventually the name was changed to Cambridge, in honor of Cambridge University in England, which the Puritan colonists greatly admired.  Cambridge, Massachusetts was officially incorporated into a town in 1636 and then, eventually, into a city in 1846.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts has a total population of 110,651 people.  This makes it the fifth most populous city in the state of Massachusetts.  Additionally, Cambridge, Massachusetts is considered part of the Greater Boston Combined Statistical Area.  According to a 2014 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Greater Boston Combined Statistical Area has a total population of 8,099,575 people.  This makes it the sixth most populous combined statistical area in the entire United States of America.

While manufacturing was considered the engine which drove historic Cambridge, Massachusetts, modern-day Cambridge, Massachusetts is undoubtedly fueled by two industries: those of technology and education.  As for technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts has been home to many technologically innovative companies such as Analog Devices, Akamai, Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN Technologies – which are now part of Raytheon), General Radio (GenRad), Lotus Development Corporation (now part of IBM), Polaroid, Symbolics, and Thinking Machines.

By 2015, however, according to a report produced by the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the two largest employers in the city, by a great margin, were Harvard University, which employs 11,997 people, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (or MIT), suppliers of 8,763 local job opportunities.

MIT, which was established on April 10th, 1861, is a highly prestigious private research university.  “MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering.  Researchers worked on computers, radar, and inertial guidance during World War II and the Cold War.”  This strategy appears to have worked for them like gang busters.  In fact, in 2017, MIT reported have a whopping endowment of $14.8 billion.

As for Harvard University, this private “Ivy League” research university was established all the way back in 1636.  As of 2016, Harvard University had an endowment of $34.541 billion.  Harvard University’s “history, influence, and wealth have made it one of the world’s most prestigious universities.”  It was named after clergyman John Harvard, its first benefactor.

As for sports, Cambridge, Massachusetts boasts Harvard’s college teams – nicknamed Harvard Crimson.  The Crimson currently play in NCAA Division I – Ivy League.  The Crimson have won 39 national team titles not bestowed upon them by the NCAA.  The largest number of championships (13) won by a single Crimson team were achieved by the Outdoor Tack and Field Teams, although the golf and fencing teams each won six.  The Crimson Football team won 8 more of those uncredited championships – going all the way back to 1875 – when Harvard was among one of the few institutions playing the game.  As for official NCAA team national championships, the Crimson have earned four.
