Cape Coral is a city located in the southwestern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Florida’s protuberance.  Prior to European colonization, this region was inhabited by the Calusas people.  However, by the time Florida was discovered by the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon in 1513, the Calusas were beginning to disappear.  Originally referred to as Redfish Point, this land was deeded by Spain to the United States in 1821 in order to pay off a substantial debt.  Redfish Point was subsequently swept up in the Seminole Wars, and became the site of The Harney Point Massacre.

More than a hundred years later, in 1957, the city of Cape Coral, Florida was founded by Leonard and Jack Rosen, who were real estate developers.  Cape Coral was originally known as Redfish Point.  The city began life as a pre-planned community and the Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC) was formed in order to develop this area.  Cape Coral, Florida would not be officially incorporated, however, until 1970.

According to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the total population of Cape Coral, Florida is 175,229 people.  This makes it the largest city in the great state of Florida lying between Tampa and Miami.  Cape Coral, of course, is considered a principal city in the Cape Coral – Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.  According to that same 2015 estimate, the Cape Coral – Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 645,899 people.
