Champaign is a city located within the eastern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Illinois. Prior to meddling by citizens of the United States, this area was, predictably, inhabited by members of the Illinois Confederacy. The city of Champaign, Illinois itself, however, was founded in 1855 following completion of the Illinois Central Railroad. Interestingly, the city was originally named West Urbana due to its close proximity to that other city, but it was renamed to Champaign in 1860. Champaign, Illinois was named after Champaign County, Ohio. The city of Champaign, Illinois was officially incorporated into a town in 1860 and then awarded a city charter in 1866.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the total population of Champaign, Illinois is 86,637 people. This makes it the tenth-most populous city in Illinois and that state’s fourth most populous city outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Speaking of metropolitan areas, Champaign, Illinois’s metropolitan area, according to that same 2016 estimate, has a total population of 231,891 people.
Champaign, Illinois is often referred to as the hub of what is known as ‘Silicon Prairie.’ In fact, the city is littered with technology and software companies. Among the technological companies with offices located within the Champaign, Illinois area are Riverbed Technology, Citrix Systems, Abbott Laboratories, Dow Innovation Center, Intelligent Medical Objects, Yahoo!, the State Farm Research Center, AMD, Intel, IBM, Amdocs, Infobright, Instarecon, Phonak, Power World, Caterpillar Simulation Center, and Volition. Additionally, the United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) within the city.
However, according to Champaign, Illinois’s 2010 City Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the area, by far, is undoubtedly the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which employs a staggering 10,900 individuals. Established in 1867 as Illinois Industrial University, today the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a public research university. It is the flagship campus of the University of Illinois and a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. As of 2015, the university has a $3.3 billion endowment with 44,087 students in total enrolled in its various programs.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Fighting Illini participate in NCAA Division I FBS – Big Ten Athletics. The Fighting Illini have won 18 NCAA national championships in total. The school has also won 7 national team titles that weren’t bestowed upon them by the NCAA. Five of these national championships occurred in football prior to 1952.
Elsewhere within the city of Champaign, Illinois is The Historic Virginia Theatre. The Historic Virginia Theatre, which opened on December 28th, 1921, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This renovated live performance and movie theatre features an ornate, Spanish Renaissance-influenced interior and hosts the annual Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival.
Professionally, the city of Champaign, Illinois is home to one sporting franchise. The Midwest Professional Basketball Association (MPBA)’s Champaign Swarm play their hoe games in Dodds Athletic Center. The Champaign Swarm have one national championship to their names.
