Clifton is a city located in the northeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of New Jersey.  Prior to invasions perpetrated by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited for hundreds of years by the Munsee-Delaware peoples.  The first permanent European settlement to form within this region occurred in 1678, when Dutch traders arrived.  Eventually, in 1693, these traders formed a Dutch Reformed congregation and settled Acquackanonk Township.  This township would survive all the way to 1917, when the city of Clifton, New Jersey replaced it by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.  The city of Clifton, New Jersey was officially incorporated on April 26th, 1917.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Clifton, New Jersey has a total population of 85,845 people.  This makes it the 11th most populous city in the entire state of New Jersey.  Additionally, this makes the city of Clifton, New Jersey the 2nd most populous municipality, out of sixteen such municipalities to be found in the county.

Clifton, New Jersey is perhaps most famous (at least, economically speaking) as serving as the home of Rutt’s Hut.  Rutt’s Hut, which was established in 1928, is a restaurant “known for its unique style of deep-fried hot dogs.  The process of frying causes the hot dog casings to crack and split, which has led to the nickname ‘Rippers’.”  This original roadside attraction (which has since grown into an official restaurant), was first opened by Royal “Abe” Rutt and his wife, Anna.  This, of course, would explain the name.  The PBS special A Hot Dog Program prominently featured Rutt’s Hut.  The restaurant has also been featured in The New York Times, numerous Food Network shows, the Travel Channel’s Deep-Fried Paradise, and the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die.  The world famous Pin-up model Bettie Page was even once photographed eating hot dogs from Rutt’s!

The city of Clifton, New Jersey is also home to Clifton Commons, a shopping center which features a 16-screen AMC movie theater, Promenade Shops at Clifton, which is an upscale mall, and many professionally tenanted low-rise office buildings.

The city of Clifton, New Jersey is also famous due to the fact it has served as the location for the John and Anna Vreeland House – or as it is often known as – ‘The Hamilton House.’  The John and Anna Vreeland House – or Hamilton House – is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.  The John and Anna Vreeland House is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  This house, which was built all the way back in the year 1817 by Anna and John Vreeland, has come to be known as one of the “last symbols of Dutch settlement in the City of Clifton, New Jersey, and one of the finest examples of early 19th century stone houses in Passaic County.”  After it had been owned by the Vreelands, it was owned by the Hamilton family from 1856 to 1972.  In 1973, it was moved to avoid demolition.
