Colby is a city located in the northwestern-most region of the present-day U.S. state of Kansas.  Prior to European incursions, this area had been inhabited since as early as 3,000 B.C.  At the time when Europeans first arrived, the Kansa-Osage had become prevalent.  As for Colby, Kansas itself, however, this city was established following the construction of a post office near the center of Thomas County, Kansas in 1882.  J.R. Colby, who was a local Kansas land assessor and preacher obtained a patent to establish a town in April of 1884.  In 1885, the land was acquired, a town charter was issued, and the city of Colby, Kansas was subsequently officially incorporated in 1886.  Predictably, the city was named after its founder.  Following Colby, Kansas’s establishment, the Union Pacific Railroad reached the city in 1887, while the Rock Island Railroad reached the city in 1888.
