Columbia is a city located right smack dab in the center of the present-day U.S. state of South Carolina.  Prior to encroachment by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Congaree people.  Hernando de Soto, a Spanish Explorer, became the first European to reach the area in 1540.  Many years later, during the South Carolina General Assembly of 1786, a new state Capital city was formed – and its name was voted upon.  That city became Columbia, South Carolina.  (Columbia is an old word for America, derived from Christopher Columbus.)  Columbia, South Carolina was officially chartered as a town in 1805 and then as a city in 1854.  Interestingly, Columbia, South Carolina was also the site of the South Carolina Secession Convention of 1860, marking the occasion when the first state seceded from the Union during events leading up to the American Civil War.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Columbia, South Carolina has a total population of 134,309 people.  This makes it the second most populous city in South Carolina and the 199th most populous city in the nation.  Columbia’s metropolitan area, according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 810,068 people.  This makes it the 71st most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Columbia, South Carolina’s economy is abuzz with companies who have their global, continental, or national headquarters within its area.  These locally-based companies include Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company (which also happens to be the second-largest supplemental insurance provider in the United States), the Ritedose Corporation, AgFirst Farm Credit Bank, South State Bank, Nexsen Pruet, and Nelson Mullins.

Additionally, Columbia, South Carolina is home to a heavy military presence.  Located in the Columbia, South Carolina area is the McEntire Joint National Guard Base, which was built in 1943 and garrisons the 169th Fighter Wing.  The Columbia, South Carolina area is also home to Fort Jackson, controlled by the U.S. Army.  Fort Jackson has been in use since 1917 and has the distinction of being the largest U.S. Army installation for Basic Combat Training.

Due to Columbia, South Carolina serving as the capital of South Carolina, the South Carolina State House is located there.  This Greek Revival structure, built in 1855 by architect John R. Niernsee, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Columbia, South Carolina is also home to the University of South Carolina, which was established in 1801 as South Carolina College.  The University of South Carolina is a public co-educational research university, with an endowment of $655,469,462 as of 2016.  In total, 50,099 students are enrolled in its system-wide programs.  The University of South Carolina Gamecocks play in NCAA Division I – SEC.  The Gamecocks have 4 total NCAA team national championships to their names.  The Gamecocks also have 6 Women’s Equestrian National Team Titles not recognized by the NCAA.
