Columbus Business Signs

During much of the 18th century, the area that would become Columbus was under the control of the French Empire.  However, at the conclusion of the French and Indian War, at the Treaty of Paris in 1763, it was given over to the British.  Following the American Revolution, in 1797, Lucas Sullivant, a Virginian surveyor, founded the first settlement in the area.  He named it ‘Franklinton’, after Benjamin Franklin.  However, after the area was chosen as the new capital of Ohio, the name was changed to Columbus, after the historical figure Christopher Columbus.  It was officially founded as Columbus in 1812 and assumed the functions of state capital in 1816.  The city serves as the seat of Franklin County.

Columbus is the largest city in Ohio and the 15th largest city in the country.  According to a 2013 estimate, the city has a population of 822,553.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area is the 28th largest in the United States, with a population of 2,370,839.  This would also make it the second largest metropolitan area in the state.

Columbus serves as the home for several high tech companies including the Battelle Memorial Institute, which is the world’s largest private research and development foundation.  The city also houses Chemical Abstracts Service (the world’s largest clearinghouse of chemical information) and NetJets, the largest fractional ownership jet aircraft fleet in the world.

As of 2013, the city hosts the headquarters for five corporations on the U.S. Fortune 500: Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, L Brands, Big Lots and Cardinal Health.  Fast-food giants Wendy’s and White Castle are based in the surrounding metropolitan area.

The other major employer in the area is Ohio State University.  This public research university was founded in 1870 under the original name ‘Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.’  The name was changed in 1878.  It is now the third largest university campus in the United States, with 63,964 total students and 6,254 total academic staff.  It has a $3.1 billion endowment.

According to USA Travel Guide in 2009, Columbus is also the site for the number one zoo in the United States.  The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has a worldwide reputation, mainly because of its director emeritus, Jack Hanna.  The Columbus Zoo is home to over 9,000 animals representing over 700 species.  It attracts 2.3 million tourists to the city each year.

Columbus’ other attractions include the Ohio Theatre, which was opened in 1928 as a movie palace.  It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977.  Another historic theater, The Southern Theatre, was opened at an even earlier date, on September 21st, 1896.  It is the oldest surviving theater in Central Ohio and one of the oldest in the state of Ohio.

Columbus has two professional sports teams, the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL, who play their home games in Nationwide Arena, and MLS’ Columbus Crew, who play their home games at Columbus Crew Stadium.  The Crew have won one MLS cup, and their stadium is noted as being the first soccer-specific stadium built in the US.

The sports teams with the biggest draw in the area, however, are inarguably the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Their football teams, founded in 1890, have won 8 National Titles.  (The most recent in 2015)  They play their home games at Ohio Stadium, which is often referred to as ‘The Horseshoe’, due to its shape.  The Horseshoe was opened in 1922.  It has a 105,000 seating capacity, making it the third largest football stadium in the country and the sixth largest non-racing stadium in the world.  The National Park Service added it to the National Register of Historic Places on March 22nd, 1974.
