Davenport Business Signs

Davenport is located in the eastern portion of the US state of Iowa, bordering the Mississippi River.  Prior to American conquest, this area was originally inhabited and owned by the Sauk, Meskwaki (Fox), and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) peoples.  Without the consent of the natives, it was sold to the United States by France in 1803, as a small portion of the Louisiana Purchase.  The first representative of the United States to visit the area was Lieutenant Zebulon Pike on August 27th, 1805.

Following the defeat of a Sauk, Meskwaki, and Kickapoo alliance by the United States in 1832 (which became known as the Black Hawk War), the city of Davenport was settled by Antoine LeClaire on May 14th, 1836.  LeClaire named the city after his friend, Colonel George Davenport, who fought in the Black Hawk War.  The city of Davenport, Iowa was officially incorporated on January 25th, 1839.

Modern day Davenport, Iowa, according to a 2015 estimate by the US Census Bureau, has a total population of 104,589 people.  This makes it the 3rd most populous city in the state of Iowa and the 294th most populous city in the country.  Davenport, Iowa is also the largest city in the Quad Cities combined statistical area.  In total, according to that same estimate, the Quad Cities combined statistical area has a total population of 474,226 people.  This makes it the 90th most populous combined statistical area in the United States.

In a 2008 report by the United States Census Bureau, it was estimated that Davenport, Iowa’s largest labor industry is manufacturing – with over 7,600 locals employed in this industry.  The two largest employers in the Quad Cities area are John Deere and Rock Island Arsenal.  The John Deere World Headquarters are located in nearby Moline, and John Deere employs 7,200 workers in the Quad Cities.

Rock Island Arsenal, which was built in 1862, is run by the U.S. Army and garrisons the Joint Munitions Command, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Rock Island District), and the U.S. Army Sustainment Command – First United States Army.  Rock Island Arsenal is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark.  According to Global Security, Rock Island Arsenal “is now the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States.”

Davenport, Iowa isn’t all about guns and tractors, however!  Other notable landmarks in the area include Rock Island Centennial Bridge, which opened in 1940, is 4,447 feet (1,355 m) long, and sustains daily traffic of 14,900 vehicles.  Davenport, Iowa is also the home of Palmer College of Chiropractic, which was established in 1897, and was the first school of chiropractic in the world.  Davenport City Hall, which was built in 1895 in the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and the Davenport Register of Historic Properties.

Davenport, Iowa hosts the annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival.  Bix Jazz Memorial Festival has been active since 1971.  As part of the annual festivities, there is a Bix 7 Road Race, which includes 18,000 or more participants.

The Quad Cities are home to several sports franchises.  These include Baseball’s MWL Quad Cities River Bandits, who play their home games at Modern Woodmen Park.  The Bandits were established in 1901 and have ten league championships to their names.  Football’s MFA Quad City Wolfpack play their home games at Ericson Field.  They have one league championship to their names.  Football’s MSFL Quad City Raiders also play at Ericson Field.  Ice Hockey’s ECHL Quad City Mallards play their home matches in i wireless Center while Basketball’s PBL Quad Cities Riverhawks play in Wharton Field House.
