Dearborn Business Signs

Dearborn is a city located in the southern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area was mostly inhabited by members of Algonquian-speaking tribes.  In the eighteenth century, French colonists had set up a trading post here, but by 1763, the land was ceded to Britain following that country’s victory in the Seven Years’ War, which is often referred to as the French and Indian War on the western side of the Atlantic.  Permanent settlement near what would later become Dearborn, Michigan occurred in 1786, following the American Revolutionary War.  Dearborn, Michigan itself was founded in 1833.  It was named after the patriot Henry Dearborn, who had been a General in the American Revolution and Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson.  Dearborn, Michigan itself was officially incorporated into a village in 1893, then into a city in 1927.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Dearborn, Michigan has a total population of 94,444 people.  This makes it the eighth most populous city in the entire state of Michigan.  Dearborn, Michigan is also considered part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area.  The Detroit Metropolitan Area, according to a 2010 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 4,296,250 people.  This makes it the 13th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Dearborn, Michigan, of course, is most famous for being the home of Ford Motor Company Founder Henry Ford.  In fact, to this day, Dearborn, Michigan still holds the honor of serving as the world headquarters for Ford Motor Company.  Ford Motor Company, which was founded more than one hundred and ten years ago, in 1903, is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.  As of 2016, the Ford Motor Company’s annual revenue was $151.8 billion, with $237.9 billion in total assets.  The Ford Motor Company, unsurprisingly, is also Dearborn, Michigan’s largest employer (by a tremendous margin), employing 44,000 locals.

Dearborn, Michigan is also home to the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village.  Formally, this large indoor/outdoor history museum complex is known as the Edison Institute.  The Edison Institute is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark District and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  The Edison Institute’s collection features the presidential limousine of John F. Kennedy (which he was assassinated in), Abraham Lincoln’s chair from Ford’s Theatre (which he was assassinated in), Thomas Edison’s laboratory, the Wright Brothers’ bicycle shop, the bus made famous by Rosa Parks’ stand (or, more accurately, sit) for Civil Rights, among many other fascinating historical artifacts.  Dearborn, Michigan is also home to Henry Ford College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

More interestingly, Dearborn, Michigan is also known as the site for the first museum in the world devoted to Arab American history and culture.  The Arab American National Museum, which opened in 2005, “seeks to dispel misconceptions about Arab Americans and other minorities.”  The museum features two permanent exhibits: one concerning the Arab experience in America, and the other features Arab contributions to “science, medicine, mathematics, architecture, and the decorative arts.”
