East Orange is a city located in the northeastern portion of the present-day U.S. state of New Jersey.  Prior to invasions perpetrated by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited for hundreds of years by the Munsee-Delaware peoples.  As for the city of East Orange, New Jersey specifically, it was originally incorporated, as a township, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 4th, 1863.  Interestingly, East Orange, New Jersey was incorporated from portions of Orange town.  As one can probably already guess, this is where East Orange, New Jersey got its name from.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of East Orange, New Jersey has a total population of 64,789 people.  This makes it the 20th most populous city in the entire state of New Jersey.  East Orange, New Jersey is considered part of Essex County, New Jersey.  In fact, according to that same 2016 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, East Orange, New Jersey is the second most populous city to be found in the entirety of Essex County, New Jersey.

East Orange, New Jersey is divided into a number of neighborhoods.  In fact, the city is known for its many neighborhoods.  These neighborhoods include, but are certainly not limited to Ampere, which is anchored “by the now defunct train station of the same name,” Greenwood (Teen Streets), which is named for Greenwood avenue, Presidential Estates (which has been recently designated “due to the streets in this area all having been named after early presidents of the United States”), Elmwood, and Doddtown (Franklin).

Economically, East Orange, New Jersey is known as having portions of its area lie within an Urban Enterprise Zone, one of only twenty seven such zones to be found in the entire state of New Jersey.  This means, among many other benefits meant “to encourage employment within the zone, shoppers can take advantage of a reduced 3.3125% sales tax rate (versus the 6.625% rate charged statewide.)  East Orange, New Jersey’s Urban Enterprise Zone was established in 1996, and it is due to expire in June of the year 2027.

As for East Orange, New Jersey’s educational situation, the city is served by East Orange School District, which is run under the supervision of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.  Otherwise, the city of East Orange, New Jersey is home to the East Orange Community Charter school, whose charter was granted by the New Jersey Department of Education.  East Orange, New Jersey is also home to the East Orange Public Library.

The city of East Orange, New Jersey is perhaps most famous, however, as serving as the site of the Ambrose-Ward Mansion.  The Ambrose-Ward Mansion is listed on both the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  The Ambrose-Ward Mansion, which was built in 1889, features fantastic example of Second Renaissance Revival architectural style and is perhaps one of the most grand buildings in the entire city of East Orange, New Jersey.
