Eden Prairie is a city located in the central-eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Minnesota. Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by members of the Ojibwa people and Mdewakanton Dakota. By 1851, though, a treaty had opened up land west of the Mississippi River to settlement by citizens of the United States. Among the settlers was John Cummins, an Irish-born immigrant who was among the first to settle in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. In fact, Cummins built the Cummins-Phipps-Grill House in 1880, which still stands to this day. Currently, the Cummins-Phipps-Grill House is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Officially, Eden Prairie, Minnesota was founded in 1858. However, it wouldn’t be until all the way on October 22nd, 1962 that the city of Eden Prairie, Minnesota would be officially incorporated. According to Warren Upham’s 1820 book, Minnesota Geographic Names, Eden Prairie, Minnesota was originally called “Eden” in 1853 by a Mrs. Elliot, who “chose the name because of her admiration of the “beautiful prairie” in the southern portion of town.”
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Eden Prairie, Minnesota has a total population of 63,914 people. This makes it the 12th most populous city in the entire state of Minnesota and the 568th most populous city in the entire country. Eden Prairie, Minnesota is also considered part of the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area. According to that same 2016 estimate, the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area has a total population of 413,651 people. This makes it the most populous metropolitan area in the state of Minnesota. Additionally, this also makes the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area the 46th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.
Eden Prairie, Minnesota is considered an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. In fact, in 2016, Money Magazine ranked Eden Prairie, Minnesota as the Second-Best Place to Live in America. Eden Prairie, Minnesota boasts walking trails and parks around its numerous lakes. These parks include Purgatory Creek (which features a war memorial), Staring Lake, and the Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail. Eden Prairie, Minnesota is home to more than 170 miles (270 km) of multi-use trails, 2,250 acres of parks, and 1,300 acres of open space.
As for Eden Prairie’s economy, it is currently home to a few businesses and other institutions. These include Digital River, SuperValu, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, and MTS Systems Corporation. The main mall in the area is the Eden Prairie Center, which is regionally recognized. Also, the largest employer in the city of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, according to its own 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, is Optum, which is responsible for 2,984 local jobs.
Eden Prairie, Minnesota is home to no professional sporting franchises of any note. However, currently, they are home to the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings’ training facilities. However, despite being in contention since 1960, 58 long years ago, the Vikings have never won any championship of note.
