Everett Business Signs

Everett is located 25 miles north of Seattle in the US state of Washington.  The Duwamish and Suquamish peoples inhabited this area of present day Washington prior to American settlement.  However, these tribes were “relocated” following the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott.  In 1861, Dennis Brigham became the first permanent United States resident of the area when he built a cabin on Port Gardner Bay’s shore.  Plans for an industrial town in the area wouldn’t be realized until 1890.  In October of that year, the Hewitt-Colby syndicate chose to name this industrial city after Everett Colby, who was the fifteen-year-old son of investor Charles L. Colby.  Apparently Everett Colby had “displayed a prodigious appetite at dinner.”  Everett Colby was himself named after famous American Whig orator Edward Everett.  The name ‘Everett’ derives from the Germanic term for ‘brave boar.’  Everett, WA was officially incorporated on May the 4th, 1893.

Today, according to a 2014 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Everett, WA has a population of 106,736 people.  This makes it the 272nd most populous city in the country.  This also makes Everett the seventh largest city in the state and the fifth largest city in the Puget Sound area alone.  Everett is near Seattle, so it is considered part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area.  The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area, according to that same 2014 report, has a total population of 3,671,478 people.  This makes it the 15th most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States.

The largest employer in the Everett, WA area is the Boeing Company.  This company, which was founded in Seattle in 1916, employs 39,000 people in the area.  In fact, the aerospace giant’s assembly plant for the 747, 767, 777, and 787 airplanes is located in this city.  Boeing’s facility in Everett, WA is famous for being “the largest building in the world by volume at 116.5 million cubic feet (3,300,000 cubic meters).”

The city of Everett, WA is also famous as serving as the site of a U.S. Navy Homeport, Naval Station Everett.  Naval Station Everett opened in 1992.  From 1997 to 2012, Naval Station Everett was the homeport for aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.  Since 2012, Naval Station Everett has served as the homeport for aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.  Naval Station Everett was also designed to homeport a US Navy carrier strike group.  The station additionally homeports two Guided-Missile Destroyers, a Coast Guard Keeper-class cutter USCGC Henry Blake, and a USCG Marine Protector Class Patrol Boat, USCGC Blue Shark.  6,000 sailors and civil service members are assigned to commands within Naval Station Everett.

One of the most striking aspects of Everett, WA’s skyline is the Xfinity Arena, with its twin-masts design.  This $83.3 million multi-purpose complex, which opened in 2003, holds 10,000 seats and has hosted such diverse events as the Ringling Brothers Circus, The Spa, Pool, and Swimspa Show, moto cross, Disney on Ice, Harlem Globetrotters, Sesame Street Live, 2008 Skate America, and the 2016 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships.

Xfinity Arena also serves as the home of Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips.  The Silvertips are named after the silvertip bear.  The Silvertips have several NHL alumni including Ryan Murray, Peter Mueller, Radko Gudas, and Zach Hamill.
