Farmington Hills is a city located in the southeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited by the Kickapoo and Fox peoples.  The first United States citizen to take this area for his own and settle down was a Quaker, Arthur Power, who hailed from Farmington, New York.  His original settlement, Quakertown, was founded in 1824.  However, by 1866, the village of Farmington, Michigan had officially been incorporated.  Farmington Hills, Michigan was officially incorporated into a city in 1926.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Farmington Hills, Michigan has a total population of 81,129 people.  This makes Farmington Hills, Michigan the second most populous city in all of Oakland County, Michigan.  Farmington Hills, Michigan is also considered part of the northwestern suburbs of Metropolitan Detroit.  Metropolitan Detroit, according to a 2010 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 4,296,250 people.  This makes the Detroit metropolitan area the 13th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

Farmington Hills, Michigan is known – nationwide – for a few things.  One of these things is its reputation as one of the safest cities in the United States.  Indeed, according to CNN, “in 2010, the area ranked as the 30th safest city in the U.S.”  On top of this accolade, Farmington Hills, Michigan, according to 24/7 Wall St., “is the 36th highest-income place in the United States with a population of 50,000 or more and ranks as 14th in America’s best cities to live list.”

Specifically, however, Farmington Hills, Michigan’s economy is dominated by Botsford Hospital.  According to Farmington Hills, Michigan’s 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the area was Botsford Hospital, responsible for 2,746 local jobs.  Coming in at second was the Robert Bosch Corporation, employing 1,600 locals.  Farmington Public Schools came in third, with 1,418 employees, while Quicken Loans supplies 1,000 jobs to the Farmington Hills, Michigan area.

On top of these main employers, Farmington Hills, Michigan is also home to Gale, “an educational publishing company owned by Cengage Learning,” along with TD Auto Finance.  Farmington Hills, Michigan is also home to the Nissan Technical Center North America and Nissan Trading Corp.  Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc. also operates an office in Farmington Hills, Michigan, while Hino Motors Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. is headquartered there.

Beyond business, Farmington Hills, Michigan houses the only Holocaust Museum in the entire state of Michigan.  The Holocaust Memorial Center (HMC), which opened in 1984, has a “mission to educate the public about the tragedy and evils of the Holocaust.”  Additionally, Farmington Hills, Michigan is no stranger to educational institutions.  Farmington Hills, Michigan is home to branches of Oakland Community College and Wayne State University.  The city also houses the Michigan School of Professional Psychology.  The Michigan School of Professional Psychology, which was founded in 1980 as the Center of Humanistic Studies, has 149 postgraduates enrolled into its various programs, as of the Fall semester of 2011.
