Fayetteville, North Carolina

Fayetteville Business Signs

Fayetteville is a city located in the south-central region of the present-day U.S. state of North Carolina. Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by successive waves of natives for at least 12,000 years. Close to the time when the Europeans first arrived, the natives here were of the Siouan peoples – tribes such as the Eno, Shakori, Waccamaw, Keyauwee, and Cape Fear. Sadly, in the 18th century, following both the Yamasee and Tuscarora Wars, English settlement began much more heavily.

As for Fayetteville, North Carolina itself, it began due to a mercantile need for a settlement on the Cape Fear River in order to secure trade with the frontier country. Initially, this settlement were two separate settlements: Cross Creek and Campbellton, but in 1783, these two settlements united and became Fayetteville, North Carolina, which was officially incorporated that same year. Fayetteville, North Carolina was named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero during the American Revolution. Fayetteville, North Carolina was the first city to be named in his honor in the United States. In fact, the Marquis de Lafayette visited this very town during his “grand tour” of the United States in 1825.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Fayetteville, North Carolina has a total population of 204,759 people. This makes it the sixth most populous city in the entire state of North Carolina and the 110th most populous city in the country. As for the Fayetteville, North Carolina metropolitan area, according to that same 2016 estimate, it has a total population of 377,193 people.

Fayetteville, North Carolina’s economic backbone is undoubtedly Fort Bragg. Indeed, the Department of Defense, which owns and operates Fort Bragg, employs more than 15,500 people and contributes $4.5 billion a year to the region’s local economy. Fort Bragg, which contains more than 50,000 active duty personnel (on top of its more than 15,500 employees), is considered the largest military installation in the world (by population). Fort Bragg is home to many U.S. Army airborne units, “most prominently the XVII Airborne Corps HQ, the 82nd Airborne Division, the United States Army Special Operations Command, and FORSCOM & USARC Headquarters.” Fort Bragg was first established at the (American) outset of World War Two.

Due to the military’s presence in the region, Fayetteville, North Carolina is also home to enclaves of several defense-minded corporations such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and L-3 Communications.

As for professional sporting franchises, Fayetteville, North Carolina is fit to bursting. Indeed, Baseball’s Carolina League’s Buies Creek Astros, who are the MLB’s Houston Astros’ Class-A Advanced Affiliate, play their home games at Jim Perry Stadium. Crown Coliseum is shared between the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Fayetteville Marksmen and Indoor Football’s American Arena League’s Cape Fear Heroes. Both the Fayetteville Marksmen and Cape Fear Heroes have won championship each to their names. Finally, Collegiate Baseball’s Coastal Plain League’s Fayetteville Swampdogs, who play their home games at J.P. Riddle Stadium, have won championship to their name as well.
