Flagstaff Business Signs
The Sinagua and Anasazi (Hisatsinom) peoples (who eventually became the Hopi Tribe) inhabited this area of northern Arizona since around 1100 AD. The first American to visit the area came in 1855. Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale camped in the area. According to the city of Flagstaff, Lieutenant Beale “had his men cut the limbs from a straight Ponderosa Pine tree in order to fly the United States flag.” According to this story, this is how the city would get its name. The first permanent settlement by Americans in Flagstaff occurred in 1876, when Thomas F. McMillan built a cabin at the base of Mars Hill. The city would not be officially incorporated until 1928.
Modern day Flagstaff, Arizona, according to a 2014 estimate by the US Census Bureau, has a population of 68,785 people. Flagstaff’s metropolitan area has a total population of 136,539 people. This makes it the 292nd most populous city in the United States.
Flagstaff, Arizona is home to a few notable manufacturers. These manufacturers include W.L. Gore & Associates (best known as the creators of Gore-Tex), Nestle Purina PetCare, SCA Tissue, and Joy Cone.
The prominent industry in the Flagstaff area, however, would probably be the tourism industry. This is due to the city’s proximity to Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon National Park, which was established on February 26th, 1919, is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the United States National Park Service, in 2014 Grand Canyon National Park attracted 4,756,771 visitors. “The park’s central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.”
The city of Flagstaff is also located near Humphreys Peak, the highest natural point in the state of Arizona. Humphreys Peak clocks in at an astonishing 12,637 ft (3,852 m). Humphreys Peak is located within the Kachina Peaks Wilderness in the Coconino National Forest. It is the highest of a group of extinct volcanoes known as the San Francisco Peaks.
Flagstaff, Arizona is also famous for its many astronomical observatories. The United States Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station was established in 1955 and “is the national dark-sky observing facility under the United States Naval Observatory.” It includes the Kaj Strand Telescope, a 1.3 and 1.0 m telescope, the 0.2 m FASTT, and the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer.
The most famous observatory in Flagstaff, however, is Lowell Observatory. Established in 1894 by astronomer Percival Lowell, Lowell Observatory is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark. In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh first discovered the dwarf planet Pluto at Lowell Observatory.
Today, Lowell Observatory includes three unnamed telescopes, the Discovery Channel Telescope, the Perkins Telescope, the John S. Hall Telescope, the LONEOS Schmidt Telescope, the 24-inch Clark Telescope, the John Vickers McAllister Telescope, the Abbot L. Lowell Astrograph (the telescope Tombaugh used to discover Pluto), and the Planet Search Survey Telescope.
