Flint Business Signs

Flint is a city located in the eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to meddling by individuals of European descent, this area is thought to be one of the oldest continually inhabited areas of Michigan.  By the dawn of the 19th century, however, several Ojibwa tribes are known to have made this part of the Saginaw Valley by Flint River their home.  The first United States citizen to settle in this region came in 1819.  His name was Jacob Smith and he was a fur trader.  His settlement, which became Flint, was named after the nearby river.  Subsequently, Flint, Michigan became “the ideal stopover on the overland route between Detroit and Saginaw.  Flint, Michigan was officially incorporated into a city in 1855.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Flint, Michigan has a total population of 97,386 people.  This makes Flint, Michigan the seventh most populous city in the entire state of Michigan.  It is also the 297th most populous city in the country.  As for the Flint, Michigan metropolitan area, according to that same 2016 estimate, it has a population of 415,376 people.  This makes the Flint, Michigan metropolitan area the 126th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

Economically, Flint, Michigan has historically been known as a leading manufacturer of carriages and later on, automobiles.  This earned the area its “Vehicle City” nickname.  Indeed, Flint, Michigan was the site of the founding of General Motors (GM) in 1908.  During the 20th century, Flint, Michigan “grew into an automobile manufacturing powerhouse for GM’s Buick and Chevrolet divisions.”  During this time, Flint, Michigan was also the site of the Flint Sit-Down Strike, which occurred in 1936-1937, and “played a vital role in the formation of the United Auto Workers.”  By the ‘70s, however, Flint, Michigan’s economy faced a major depression following GM’s downsizing.

Today, Flint, Michigan is home to several sporting franchises of note.  Michigan Rugby Football Union’s Flint Rogues play at Longway Park.  Great Lakes Football League’s Flint Fury play at Atwood Stadium.  Women’s American Basketball Association’s Flint Monarchs play in Mott’s Ballenger’s Fieldhouse, while Basketball’s ABA’s Flint-Vehicle City Chargers play in the New Standard Academy Gym.  Roller Derby’s Flint City Derby Girls play their matches in Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center.  Ontario Hockey League’s Flint Firebirds also play their home matches in this center.  Major Arena Soccer League’s Waza Flo also play in this center.

Tragically, since 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan has been under a federal public health state of emergency.  This is due to greedy, morally bankrupt local politicians forcibly switching the city’s water supply from Lake Huron (via Detroit) to the Flint River.  According to a Virginia Tech report, “the problem was compounded with the fact that anticorrosive measures were not implemented.  After two independent studies, lead poisoning caused by the water was found in the area’s population.”  On top of this, due to the tainted water, an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease has also occurred.

As of 2018 (so four years after the fact), Flint, Michigan is still without clean, safe water.
