Florissant is a city located in the mid-eastern-most portion of the present-day U.S. state of Missouri.  Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited for thousands of years.  In fact, this area was a hub for Mississippian Culture and there was a major city, now known as the Cahokia Mounds, in the region, which was active from 900 AD to 1500 AD.  Following the Mississippian Culture, other Native cultures made the area their home, such as the Siouan-speaking Osage and the Illiniwek peoples.  As for Florissant, Missouri itself, the exact date of early European settlement is largely unknown.  However, Florissant, Missouri’s first civil government officially formed in 1786.  At this time, it was a French town inhabited by French settlers, but it was ruled over by the Spanish Empire.  At this time, the town was called ‘Fleurissant’ – French for ‘Blooming’ by the French while the Spanish called it ‘St. Ferdinand.’  However, soon after, the name Florissant, Missouri took off.
