Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers Business Signs

Fort Myers is a city located on the southwestern edge of the present-day U.S. state of Florida’s protuberance.  Prior to meddling by European explorers and United States opportunists, this land was inhabited by the Seminole peoples.  Interestingly, Fort Myers, Florida began as one of the first forts built along the Caloosahatchee River by the United States military during the American Indian Wars and subsequent Seminole Wars.  Fort Myers, Florida had a strategic location, due to its visibility and access to the Atlantic’s waterways.  This fort was named after Colonel Abraham Myers.  Following the American Indian Wars and Seminole Wars, Fort Myers, Florida fell into the hands of the Confederates.  However, at the end of the American Civil War, the Confederates abandoned the area.  What would eventually become the city of Fort Myers, Florida was first settled on February 21st, 1866 by Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez.

Today, according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Fort Myers, Florida has a total population of 74,013 people.  Additionally, Fort Myers, Florida also has the honor of serving as the county seat for Lee County, Florida.  Fort Myers, Florida is also considered Lee County’s commercial center.

Fort Myers, Florida is a gateway to the Southwest Florida region.  As such, it is also considered a major tourist attraction.  In fact, two buildings located within the city of Fort Myers, Florida have certainly become foundational reasons for this tourist pull.  Fort Myers has the honor of serving as the location for the winter homes of two early twentieth century industrial behemoths: Thomas Edison (“Seminole Lodge”) and Henry Ford (“The Mangoes.”)  These mansions are located adjacent to one another.

Fort Myers, Florida isn’t all about rich people’s houses, however.  The city is also bustling with institutions of higher learning like Hodges University, Keiser University, Nova Southeastern University, Rasmussen College, Southern Technical College, Fort Myers Technical College, and Florida Gulf Coast University.

Another of Fort Myers, Florida’s attractions is Edison Bridge (Florida), which, of course, was named after Thomas Edison.  Edison Bridge (Florida) opened on February 11th, 1931 and is a 55 foot (17 meter) concrete girder bridge.  Today, this bridge has been split up into two distinct bridges.  Elsewhere in the city of Fort Myers, Florida is the Calusa Nature Center Planetarium.  This planetarium features a planetarium (obviously), a museum, three nature trails, butterfly and bird aviaries, and a gift shop.  Fort Myers, Florida is also home to Edison Mall, Historic Downtown, the Murphy-Burroughs House, the Imaginarium Science Center, and the Southwest Florida Museum of History.

As for sports, the city of Fort Myers, Florida has a modest representation.  In fact, the city is home to City of Palms Park, which at one time had been the spring training home of MLB’s Boston Red Sox.  This park, which opened in 1993, has a seating capacity of 8,000.  Fort Myers, Florida also hosts the annual City of Palms Classic, which is a high school basketball tournament in operation since 1973.
