Frederick, Maryland

Frederick Business Signs

Frederick is a city located in the northwestern portion of the present-day U.S. state of Maryland.  Since prehistoric times, this area has been known as a trading crossroads.  In fact, prior to occupation by forces of the United States, many Native American tribes such as the Seneca, Tuscarora, Lenape, and Piscataway had contact with one another here.  As for Frederick, Maryland itself, though, it was initially laid out by land speculator Daniel Dulany in 1745.  He called the settlement “Frederick Town”.  Interestingly, it has been lost to time just which Frederick, exactly, Frederick, Maryland was named for.  Sources believe it could either be Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore (who had been one of the proprietors of Maryland), Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, or even Frederick “The Great” of Prussia.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Frederick, Maryland has a total population of 70,060 people.  This makes it the second-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind only Baltimore herself.  Additionally, Frederick, Maryland is also considered part of the combined statistical area of Baltimore-Washington.  According to a 2013 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Baltimore-Washington combined statistical area has a total population of 9,331,587 people.  This makes it the 4th most populous combined statistical area in the entire United States of America.

Frederick, Maryland is known economically as the home of the Frederick Municipal Airport.  The Frederick Municipal Airport, which opened in 1946, is a public airport accommodating general aviation traffic.  Frederick, Maryland is also home to a military installation as well: the U.S. Army’s Fort Detrick.  Fort Detrick, which was built in 1931, is a “United States Army Medical Command installation.”  In fact, from 1943 to 1969, Fort Detrick serves as the center for the US biological weapons program.  Since then, Fort Detrick has “hosted most elements of the United States biological defense program.”  As part of this capacity, Fort Detrick is home to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), with its bio-defense agency, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).

As one might guess, Fort Detrick is Frederick, Maryland’s largest employer, responsible for 10,000 local jobs.  As for other major employers in the area, they include the Frederick County Board of Education, which employs 5,538 individuals, the Frederick Memorial Healthcare System, which provides 2,800 people their livelihoods, and Frederick County Government, responsible for 2,130 jobs.

The city of Frederick, Maryland is home to several sporting franchises of note  These include the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union’s Frederic Rugby, which consists of a group of local rugby teams, Semi-Pro Baseball League’s Frederick Flying Dogs, named for their local primary sponsor, the Flying Dog Brewery, National Premier Soccer League’s FC Frederick, a semi-pro soccer team who play their home games at Thomas Athletic Field at Hood College, and of course, the Frederick Keys.  Baseball’s A-Advanced Carolina League’s Frederick Keys are affiliated with MLB’s Baltimore Orioles.  The Keys play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.  They have five league titles to their names.  Additionally, they are named after Francis Scott Key, who was a Frederick Native.  Key is famous for writing the United States of America’s official national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
