Gilbert, Arizona is located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Arizona.  It is southeast of Phoenix and is included in the larger city’s metropolitan area.  Prior to incursions by citizens of the United States, this area of the country had been inhabited by the Hohokam people.  The Hohokam lived in this area for 2,000 years prior to abandoning it in 1450.

As for Gilbert, Arizona itself, the town was founded by William “Bobby” Gilbert, who, in 1902, provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in order to construct a rail line between Phoenix and Florence.  Ayer’s Grocery Store became the town’s first store in 1910 and first post office in 1912.  The town of Gilbert, Arizona was officially incorporated in July of 1920.

According to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, Gilbert, Arizona has a total population of 247,542 people.  This makes it the 85th most populous city in the United States.  Interestingly, Gilbert, Arizona is also considered the most populous incorporated town in the country as well.  As stated above, Gilbert, Arizona is part of the larger Phoenix Metropolitan Area.  The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, according to that same 2015 estimate, has a total population of 4,574,531 people.  This makes it the 12th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Due to Gilbert, Arizona’s agricultural origins, the town was once known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World.”  Today, however, Gilbert, Arizona’s population has exploded and subsequently, in 2010, it was honored by CNN as being the 36th Best Place to Live in the nation.  During that same year, listed Gilbert, Arizona as one of the country’s “top places to live and learn.”

Gilbert, Arizona’s 2013 Town Comprehensive Annual Financial Report claims the city’s top employers are Gilbert Public Schools, Banner Health, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, and the Town of Gilbert.  Respectively, these fine institutions employ 3,642, 2,268, 1,233, and 1,191 people.  Other large employers in the area include Fry’s Food and Drug, Go Daddy, Chandler Unified School District, B H Drywall, and Dillard’s Retail and Distribution.

Gilbert, Arizona’s arts scene is also flourishing.  In fact, performers including Jimmy Eat World, Lifehouse, Lydia, The Maine, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and Elektrolytes have all been associated with the town.  The art form of architecture is no different.  In fact, Gilbert, Arizona is home to one building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Gilbert Elementary School, which was built in 1913, houses the Gilbert Historical Museum.

Other buildings around town are listed as historical by the Gilbert Heritage District: Gilbert High School (built in 1920), The Gilbert Water Tower (1925), Gilbert’s first jail house (1918), The Tone Building (1929 – now housing Joe’s Real BBQ Restaurant), Liberty Market (1936), The Creed Building (1918), the Attaway Phelps-Blakely Building (1910), the Bank of Gilbert (1917), Clare’s Metal Shop (1918 – now housing Bergies Coffee), Clement’s Garage (1934), and the American Legion Post 39 (1934).
