Greeley is a Home Rule Municipality located in the northern most portion of the current U.S. state of Colorado.  Prior to incursions by citizens of the United States, this area was used by the nomadic Ute peoples as a summer hunting ground.  By the 1850s, however, this land was considered part of Utah Territory.

Back in 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Horace Greeley, who was the editor of the New-York Tribune at the time, visited this area in order to fund a religious utopian society now known as Union Colony (though it was referred to back then as Greeley Colony or The Union Temperance Colony).  The colony would not be officially founded until 1870, however.  These ‘utopians’ wished to promote agricultural settlements and ‘high moral standards.’  Union Colony’s name was later changed in order to honor Horace Greeley.  On April 6th, 1886, Colorado Governor Benjamin Harrison Eaton officially declared Greeley, Colorado a city.

According to a July, 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the town of Greeley, Colorado has a population of 100,883 people.  This makes it the 12th most populous city in the state of Colorado.  Greeley, Colorado also serves as the county seat for Weld County, Colorado.  It is also the most populous city in this county.  Additionally, Greeley, Colorado is considered a major city of the Front Range Urban Corridor.

Today, Greeley, Colorado is home to a few notable companies.  These include the meatpacker JBS Swift & Company, the outsourcing company StarTek, and the contractor Hensel Phelps Construction.  Interestingly, Greeley, Colorado is also home to the Colorado/Kansas operations for the natural gas utility Atmos Energy.

As reported by the 2014-2015 Greeley, Colorado Economic and Demographic Profile, JBS Swift & Company is the largest employer in the area, providing jobs for 4,654 locals.  The second highest employer in Greeley, Colorado is the North Colorado Medical Center, employing 2,885 individuals.  Vestas, State Farm, and Halliburton Energy Services each employ more than one thousand people in the Greeley, Colorado area as well.  Greeley, Colorado is also the home of the Greeley Air National Guard Station, Greeley, where Colorado Air National Guard’s 137th Space Warning Squadron (137 SWS) is stationed.

In 2012, the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade certified the Greeley Creative District as an Official Creative District.  This, in part, was due to the Union Colony Civic Center, which is considered one of the largest performing arts venues in the great state of Colorado.  Built in 1988, the Union Colony Civic Center is comprised of two separate performing arts venues: Monfort Concert Hall, which seats 1,686 attendees, and Hensel Phelps Theatre, which seats 214 people.  The Union Colony Civic Center “hosts hundreds of events per year…[including] off-Broadway musicals, concerts, comedy shows, sponsors events held by the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Greeley Chorale, and other local and regional productions.”

As can already be surmised, Greeley, Colorado is also home to the University of Northern Colorado.  UNC, which was established in 1889 as the State Normal School of Colorado, is today a baccalaureate and graduate research university with a $81.49 million endowment, as of 2015, with a total of 12,084 students enrolled.

The UNC Bears participate in the NCAA Division I FCS Big Sky Conference.  UNC Bears football play their home games at Nottingham Field while their basketball teams play in Bank of Colorado Arena at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.  UNC Bears football have won two NCAA Division II National Championships over the years.
