Gulfport Business Signs

Gulfport is located on the southern tip of Mississippi state.  Predictably, Gulfport is also located beside the Gulf of Mexico.  This is, of course, where its current name is derived.  Prior to settlement by United States citizens, this area was inhabited by the Choctaw and Biloxi Native American peoples.  These tribes (and many like them) were forcibly removed from their land by the United States government during the 1800s.  The earliest settlement in the area, Mississippi City, appeared on a map of Mississippi in 1855.  Mississippi City is now a suburb of Gulfport.  Gulfport itself was founded by William H. Hardy, who was president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad (G&SIRR).  G&SIRR “connected inland lumber mills to the coast.”  The city of Gulfport was incorporated on July 28th, 1898, but it wasn’t until 1902 that the harbor was finished, allowing the Port of Gulfport to become an entity which now feeds millions of dollars in annual sales and tax revenue into the state.

Today, according to a 2013 estimate by the US Census Bureau, Gulfport, Mississippi has a total population of 71,012 people.  This makes it the second most populous city in Mississippi, after Jackson, which is the state’s capital.  Gulfport, Mississippi is the 476th most populous city in the country.  Additionally, Gulfport is the larger of the two principal cities of the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area.  According to that same 2013 report, the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 382,516 people.  This makes it the 137th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Gulfport, Mississippi’s 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report claims the city’s top employer, by quite a large margin, to be the Naval Construction Battalion Center, responsible for 5,500 jobs.  The Naval Construction Battalion Center, which has been in use since 1942, is a 1,100-acre industrial complex maintained by the U.S. Navy.  This center is home to the Atlantic Fleet Seabees.  The Seabees, who have also been in operation since 1942, are an integral part of the United States Naval Construction Forces (NCF).  The name ‘Seabees’ originated from the initials ‘CB,’ which comes from the term ‘Construction Battalion.’

The Naval Construction Battalion Center is among a number of military installations located at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.  The airport’s other on-site military installations include the 890th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy), which is a unit of Mississippi Army National Guard’s 168th Engineer Brigade, the U.S. Army’s 1108th Theater Aviation Support Maintenance Group, the Air Force and Mississippi Air National Guard’s 255th Air Control Squadron and 209th Civil Engineer Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard and Mississippi Air National Guard’s Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center.

Other sites of note in and around the city of Gulfport, Mississippi include Island View Casino, the successor to the Copa Casino.  Island View Casino opened in 2006 and boasts 970 rooms and a steakhouse.  In fact, this casino has 80,000 square feet in total dedicated to gaming.  Elsewhere in Gulfport is the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS), which is a non-profit maintaining the city’s Marine Life Oceanarium.  According to its website, IMMS, established in 1984, aims to educate, conserve, and research “marine mammals in the wild and under human care.”

Gulfport, Mississippi is not currently home to any sports franchises of note.  However, it is the birthplace (in 1969) of legendary Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre, a unanimous first-ballot member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and arguably the greatest player to ever grace the gridiron.
