Hobbs is a city located in the southeastern-most portion of the present-day U.S. state of New Mexico. Prior to U.S. invasions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Mescalero Apache group of Native Americans. Hobbs, New Mexico itself was initially founded all the way back in 1907, when James Hobbs and his family established a homestead in the area. Evidently, the city was named after this ‘Hobbs’ family. The first Hobbs post office opened in 1910, and by 1911 twenty five landowners had arrived to live in the vicinity. The city of Hobbs, New Mexico was officially incorporated in the year 1929.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Hobbs, New Mexico has a total population of 38,143 people. Additionally, Hobbs, New Mexico is considered the principal city of the Hobbs, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area. Interestingly, the Hobbs, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical area includes all of Lea County, which is where the city of Hobbs, New Mexico is itself located.
Historically, the city of Hobbs, New Mexico has been known for its role in the oil industry. In fact, the city of Hobbs, New Mexico rapidly expanded following the discovery of oil in the area by the Midwest Oil Company, all the way back in 1927. By 1929, an oil refinery had been built within the city of Hobbs, New Mexico’s vicinity.
Another interesting historical tidbit to be found within the vicinity of the city of Hobbs, New Mexico occurred back during the initial outbreak of World War II (for the United States Forces, of course.) In 1942, the Hobbs Army Air Base was built in the city, in order to help in the war effort. Following the end of the war, however, the city of Hobbs, New Mexico bought back the air base and subsequently converted it into the Hobbs Industrial Air Park. To this day, the Hobbs Industrial Air park “is still used for soaring competitions.” Not only this, but the Hobbs Industrial Air Park also serves as the headquarters of the Soaring Society of America. The Soaring Society of America was founded all the way back in 1932 by Warren E. Eaton in order “to promote the sport of soaring in the USA and internationally.”
As for education, the city of Hobbs, New Mexico is home to three institutions of note. The first of these is the University of the Southwest, which is “a private interdenominational Christian four-year university.” The city of Hobbs, New Mexico is also home to New Mexico Junior College, which, as its name would suggest, is a public junior college. New Mexico Junior College’s baseball team won the NJCAA World Series in 2005, and was runner up in 2007. Hobbs High School is the third educational institution of note located in the city of Hobbs, New Mexico’s vicinity. Hobbs High School is listed among the top 1000 public schools in the U.S. Hobbs High School has also won 17 State Boys Basketball Championships – which is the most in the entire state of New Mexico.
