Hollywood Business Signs

Hollywood is a city located on the southeastern portion of the present-day state of Florida’s protuberance.  Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by various native groups for four thousand years and then subsequently inhabited by the Tequesta peoples for two thousand years.  Due to a combination of Spanish biological warfare and conflict with the neighboring Calusa during the 16th century, the Tequesta were soon to disappear forever.  This area was then taken over by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Confederate States of America, then the United States yet again.

Hollywood, Florida, specifically, was founded by Joseph W. Young in 1921.  Young’s initial vision for the city involved the creation of a “motion picture colony” on the East Coast of the United States.  Naturally, Young named Hollywood, Florida after Hollywood, California.  However, his dream was not to be.  After a hurricane, the Great Depression, and Young’s death in 1934, Hollywood, Florida never became Hollywood East.  Hollywood, Florida was officially incorporated into a city on November 28th, 1925.

Today, according to a 2013 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, Hollywood, Florida has a total population of 146,526 people.  This makes it the twelfth most populous city in the state of Florida.  Hollywood, Florida is also considered a principal city in the Miami metropolitan area.  According to a 2015 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the Miami metropolitan area has a total population of 6,012,331 people.  The Miami Metropolitan area is the eighth largest metropolitan area in the United States and the 67th largest metropolitan area in the world.

Hollywood, Florida is home to the headquarters of HEICO and the Invicta Watch Group, which is “a manufacturer of timepieces and writing instruments.”  However, according to Hollywood, Florida’s 2011 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the city’s top employers are Memorial Healthcare System, responsible for 10,000 employees, The Continental Group, which employs 3,900 people, and the City of Hollywood Florida itself, providing 1,208 local jobs to the area.

Hollywood, Florida is perhaps best known, however, for Hollywood Beach, which features a boardwalk extending 2.5 miles along the Atlantic Ocean.  Hollywood, Florida also boasts the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, which “presents contemporary visual and performing arts shows and includes an adjacent art school and the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center.”  This whole complex was established in 1975.

Many buildings within the Hollywood, Florida area are also notable.  For example, The Hollywood Garden Club, The Hollywood Women’s Club, The Hammerstein House, and The Joseph Wesley Young House are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  In fact, the Joseph Wesley Young House was built in 1925 in the Mediterranean style of architecture by the founder of Hollywood, Florida itself, Joseph Wesley Young.  Other buildings of note in the Hollywood, Florida area include The Hollywood Printing and Publishing Plant, The Flora Apartment Building, The Hollywood Beach Hotel, The Great Southern Hotel, and The Hollywood Playhouse, which is now home to a church.
