Houston Business Signs
The city of Houston was founded in 1836 and incorporated on June 5th, 1837. It was named after former General Sam Houston, who, at the time, was the president of the Republic of Texas.
Today, Houston is the largest city in the South and the most populous city in Texas, home to 2.16 million people, not counting Houston’s metropolitan area, which has a population of over 6 million people.
Houston is home to a Museum District and a Theater District, which bring in 7 million tourists a year. On top of these attractions, Houston houses the Texas Medical Center, which constitutes the world’s largest concentration of health care and research institutions.
Made famous by the immortal words of the Apollo 13 crew, “Houston, we have a problem”, NASA’s Johnson Space Center, located in the Clear Lake Area of Houston, hosts Mission Control Center for America’s space exploration.
Houston hosts the annual 20-day Livestock Show and Rodeo (sometimes referred to as RodeoHouston), which many consider to be the city’s “signature event.” The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the world’s largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition and includes one of the richest regular-season rodeo events. It was previously held in the Astrodome, but has since been moved to NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant Stadium).
As for sports, Houston has teams for every major professional league except the NHL. The Houston Oilers (of the National Football League) once played in the Astrodome but were moved to Tennessee in 1997 and eventually became the Titans. The Houston Texans replaced them in 2002 and currently play in NRG Stadium. In Major League Baseball (MLB), the Houston Astros have played since 1962 and made one World Series appearance in 2005. The Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) have won two Championships, in 1994 and 1995. The Houston Dynamo and the Houston Dash play in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the National Women’s Soccer League, respectively.
