Irvine Business Signs

Historically, the Gabrieleno peoples inhabited the area of Southern California, which would become Irvine for 2,000 years prior to European colonization.  In 1769, Spain’s Gaspar de Portola became the first European to visit the area.  Portola claimed the area for the King of Spain, who owned it until Mexican independence in 1821.  The Mexican government provided grants for Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin, and Rancho Lomas de Santiago.  During the 1860s, American James Irvine slowly bought up all these areas and founded Irvine Ranch.  This, of course, is where the city’s name originates.  Irvine, California was officially incorporated on December 28th, 1971.
