Kalamazoo Business Signs

Kalamazoo is a city located in the southern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by members of the Hopewell Culture.  The Hopewell Culture migrated into the area before the first millennium and declined following the 8th century.  Before Europeans arrived, the Potawatomi Culture had taken over the area.  The first European explorer to visit this area of Michigan was Frenchman Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, in 1680.  As for the settlement of Kalamazoo, Michigan itself, it was settled after the United States entered the picture by Titus Bronson in 1829.  Bronson initially named the settlement after himself.  However, due to Bronson’s agitated constitution, he was eventually run out of town (he had been fined for stealing a cherry tree.)  By 1838, the town’s name had been changed to Kalamazoo.  Kalamazoo is thought to have meant ‘boiling water’ in the Potawatomi language.  The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan was officially incorporated in 1884.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan has a total population of 75,984 people.  As for the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan area, a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau claimed its total population to be 335,340 people.  This makes it the 151st most populous metropolitan area in the United States of America.
