Kenner Business Signs

Kenner is a city located in the southeastern-most region of the present-day U.S. state of Louisiana.  Before Europeans arrived to meddle in this area’s affairs, the Tchoupitoulas peoples inhabited the region, along the Mississippi River.  Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was the first European to set foot in the region in 1682.  However, it would take a long time for the city of Kenner, Louisiana itself to be founded.  Eventually, in 1855, it was, by Minor Kenner, on three plantation properties he and his family had previously purchased.  Kenner, Louisiana was subsequently officially first incorporated in 1867.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Kenner, Louisiana has a total population of 67,089 people.  This makes it the sixth-most populous city in the entire state of Louisiana.  Kenner, Louisiana is also considered part of the New Orleans metropolitan area.  According to that same 2016 estimate, the New Orleans metropolitan area has a total population of 1,262,888 people.  This makes it the 46th most populous metropolitan area in the United States of America.

Interestingly, Kenner, Louisiana’s northern portion has often been referred to as “Little Honduras,” due to the area’s large Hispanic and Latino population.  Indeed, Kenner, Louisiana has the highest number of Hispanic and Latino people among cities in Louisiana.  For this reason, Kenner’s Hispanic Resource Center serves as a cultural hub offering ESL classes and other kinds of after school programs.

Kenner, Louisiana also holds the honor of serving as the home of Louis Armstrong International Airport, which is New Orleans’ international airport.  Louis Armstrong International Airport, which was originally named Moisant Field, after “daredevil aviator” John Moisant, who died in an aviation accident in 1910 where the airport now stands, opened to commercial service in May of 1946.  Louis Armstrong International Airport is currently the “focus city” for Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines.

Elsewhere in the city of Kenner, Louisiana is the Pontchartrain Center, which is the second-largest convention center in the New Orleans metropolitan area.  The Pontchartrain Center, which opened in 1991, is a 4,600-seat multi-purpose arena hosting concerts and local sporting events.  Operated by SMG, the Pontchartrain Center also hosts various trade shows and boasts 46,080 sq. ft. of exhibit space and 14,681 sq. ft. of meeting rooms.  Famous events which have taken place within the Pontchartrain Center have included Ultimate Fighting Championship’s UFC 16: Battle in the Bayou and UFC 18: Road to the Heavyweight Title.

Kenner, Louisiana is also home to Ochsner Medical Center – Kenner, The Esplanade Mall, Chateau Golf and Country Club, Treasure Chest Casino (which is located on a boat), and Rivertown, which is a historic district located along Kenner, Louisiana’s original main street.

Along this Rivertown historic district sit notable local landmarks such as the Rivertown Repertory Theatre, Kenner’s Heritage Park, the Kenner Planetarium & MegaDome Cinema, and the Rivertown Science Center, which is sponsored by Freeport McMoran.  Laketown is a park located where Williams Boulevard hits Lake Pontchartrain.  It features a boat launch along with two piers.
