Lansing is a city located in the central portion of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan. In fact, since 1847, Lansing has been the capital of Michigan. Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Potawatomi peoples. The first individual of European descent to arrive in this region was Hugh Heward, a British fur trader who came in 1790. It would not be until 1835-1836 when a pair of brothers from New York plotted this area and named it Biddle City. They conned many from Lansing, New York into believing there was more of a town there than there actually was. When the settlers arrived, they knew they had been conned, but many of them chose to stay, and eventually the village of Lansing, Michigan was established. They named it, as one can guess, after the Lansing in New York. The city of Lancing, Michigan was officially incorporated in 1859.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Lansing, Michigan has a total population of 116,020 people. This makes it the fifth most populous city in the entire state of Michigan. As for the Lansing, Michigan Metropolitan area, according to that same estimate, it has a total population of 464,036 people.
Due to its position as the state of Michigan’s capital, Lansing, Michigan is home to the Michigan State Capital Building. Completed in 1878, this Neoclassical/Italianate/Renaissance Revival structure is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and is also a Michigan State Historic Site. Even today, it houses the chambers and offices of the Michigan Legislature, Governor, and Lieutenant Governor of the state of Michigan.
As for Lansing, Michigan’s economy, it is, as a result of it serving as the state’s capital, heavily influenced by the State government. In fact, according to a 2014 report by Lansing Area Economic Partners, the city of Lansing, Michigan’s largest employer, by a fairly large margin, is the State of Michigan, which supplies 14,249 local jobs. The second largest employer in the Lansing, Michigan area is Michigan State University, responsible for 11,100 employees. Sparrow Health System comes in third, employing 10,858 people, while General Motors has 5,153 locals on its payroll.
Michigan State University, which is located in Lansing, Michigan, is a public research university which was established in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. Today, Michigan State University has 50,545 students enrolled into its various programs with a $3 billion endowment, as of 2017. The MSU Spartans, who play in NCAA Division I’s Big Ten, have been the recipients of 20 NCAA national team championships and 10 non-NCAA national team championships – six of which were earned by their football teams.
As for professional sporting franchises, Lansing, Michigan is home to a few. Baseball’s Midwest League’s Lansing Lugnuts play at Cooley Law School Stadium. The Lugnuts are affiliated with MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays and have nine league titles to their name. Independent Basketball Association’s Lansing Capitals play their home games in Aim High Sports Arena.
