Las Cruces is a city located in the south central region of the present-day U.S. state of New Mexico.  Prior to incursions by Europeans and those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Manso peoples, with the Mescalero Apache living in the vicinity.  Subsequently, this entire area was claimed by the Spanish in 1598, when Juan de Onate claimed all territory north of the Rio Grande for New Spain.  Later, Juan de Onate became the “first governor of the Spanish territory of New Mexico.”  Over the next several hundred years, this area fell into Mexican, Texan, and finally in 1848, into U.S. hands.  As for the city of Las Cruces (The Crosses), New Mexico itself, it was founded in 1849 when the US Army established its town plans.  The city of Las Cruces, New Mexico was officially incorporated in 1907.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico has a total population of 101,759 people.  This makes it the second most populous city in the entire state of New Mexico, after Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Las Cruces, New Mexico is also considered part of the far larger El Paso-Las Cruces combined statistical area.  The El Paso-Las Cruces CSA, according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 1,053,267 people.  This makes it the 54th most populous CSA in the entire United States.

While the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico’s most prominent employer is the federal government (due to the nearby White Sands Test Facility and White Sands Missile Range), the area is also now considered a hub for the commercial space industry.  Indeed, the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico is home to Spaceport America, which has “completed several successful manned, suborbital flights.”  Additionally, the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico is also home to the headquarters for Virgin Galactic, which is “the world’s first company to offer suborbital spaceflights.”

The city of Las Cruces is also home to several prominent medical centers as well.  These include, but are certainly not limited to, Memorial Medical Center, MountainView Regional Medical Center, and Addus HealthCare.

Elsewhere within the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico is New Mexico State University, which is a public land-grant and space-grant research university.  In fact, New Mexico State University, which was founded all the way back in 1888, holds the distinction of being “the oldest public institution of higher education in the entire state of New Mexico.”  As of 2017, New Mexico State University has a whopping $167.5 million endowment, with 24,580 students in total enrolled into its various academic programs.

As for sports, the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico is home to New Mexico State University’s Aggies, who have sporting teams in many different athletic disciplines.  Indeed, New Mexico State Aggies participate in NCAA Division I FBS’ Western Athletic Conference Independent.  The Aggies have won NCAA Final Four appearance, one Sun Bowl victory, 17 golfing conference championships, and one Women’s College Softball World Series appearance to their name.
