Los Angeles Business Signs

The area of Southern California, which would eventually become Los Angeles, was historically the home of the Chumash and Tongva peoples.  The first European settler to the region was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.  He claimed the area for Spain in 1542.  On September 4th, 1781, Spanish governor Felipe de Neve officially founded Los Angeles, or ‘The City of the Angels’.  The city was incorporated into a municipality on April 4th, 1850, which was five months before California even became a state.

According to the 2010 US Census, L.A. has a population of 3,792,621.  This makes it the second-largest city in the country, after New York City, and the most populous city in the state of California.  The city serves as the focal point of the larger Los Angeles metropolitan area, which a 2012 U.S. Census Bureau Report cited as having a population of 13 million.  That same report also claimed that the Greater Los Angeles Area region has a population of over 18 million people.  This makes L.A. one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in the U.S.  Los Angeles County is the most populated county in the country.

Los Angeles has been ranked sixth in the Global Cities Index and 9th on the Global Power Index.  The L.A. CSA, as of 2008, has a GMP of $831 billion.  This makes it the third largest in the world, following the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas.  One of the main forces driving the city’s success is the fact that it leads the world in the creation of television productions, video games, and recorded music.  L.A. is also one of the leaders in motion picture production.

In fact, the Los Angeles area is so intertwined with the entertainment industry that the six major film studios are located in the area.  Three of them – Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and Universal Pictures – are located within the Los Angeles city limits.  Other major companies in the L.A. area include Occidental Petroleum, Health Net, Reliance Steel & Aluminum, AECOM, CBRE Group, Tutor Perini, American Apparel, Far East National Bank, Farmers Insurance Group, Herbalife, Mercury Insurance Group, and Sunkist.  The city’s largest private sector employer is the University of Southern California (USC), which brings in $4 billion annually to the local economy.

The most iconic landmark in the city of Los Angeles is the Hollywood Sign.  Originally built in 1923, it initially read ‘Hollwoodland’ and advertised a local real estate development.  Over the years, however, it has made an indelible mark upon popular culture.  Today, it stands on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains and is spelled out in 45-foot-tall (14 m) white capital letters, and is 350 feet (110 m) long.

Other attractions in the Los Angeles area include the art Deco Griffith Observatory, which opened in 1935, and offers a beautiful view of the Los Angeles Basin, TCL Chinese Theatre along the Hollywood Walk of Fame (opened in 1927), and Dolby Theatre, which opened in 2001.  Dolby Theatre is now the venue for the annual Academy Awards ceremonies (the Oscars).

Los Angeles has always offered a cornucopia of professional sports teams.  The city’s current lineup of franchises includes MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, who play at Dodger Stadium.  They have won five World Series in L.A.  MLB’s Los Angeles Angels, who play at Angel Stadium, have won one World Series in L.A.  The NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings all play in the Staples Center.  The Kings have won two Stanley Cups in L.A., while the Lakers have won 11 NBA Championship Finals in L.A.  The Sparks have won two WNBA Finals.  NHL’s Anaheim Ducks play in the Honda Center and have won one Stanley Cup.  MLS’ LA Galaxy play at StubHub Center and have won five league titles.
