Maple Grove is a city located in the central-eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Minnesota. Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by members of the Winnebago tribe. By 1851, though, a treaty had opened up land west of the Mississippi River to settlement by citizens of the United States. As for Maple Grove, Minnesota itself, however, it was first settled in 1851 by Louis Gervais. Slowly, a town grew from this initial settlement. It was known for its stands of maple trees and its abundant supply of maple syrup, and this, of course, is where Maple Grove got its name. The village of Maple Grove, Minnesota was officially founded in 1858, although the city of Maple Grove, Minnesota would not be officially incorporated until all the way in 1954.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Maple Grove, Minnesota has a total population of 69,576 people. This makes it the eighth most populous city in the entire state of Minnesota. This also makes Maple Grove, Minnesota the 513th most populous city in the country. Maple Grove, Minnesota is also considered part of the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area. According to that same 2016 estimate, the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area has a total population of 413,651 people. This makes it the most populous metropolitan area in the state of Minnesota. Additionally, this also makes the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area the 46th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.
Maple Grove, Minnesota is known for its multi-varied retail spaces. In fact, Maple Grove, Minnesota is home to more retail space than any other city in the entire state of Minnesota, except for Bloomington, Minnesota, which is home to the Mall of America, of course. Maple Grove, Minnesota is home to the state’s “first so-called ‘lifestyle center’” – The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes. The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, which was built in 2003, was designed to evoke a “mid-century American village” and contains 412,000 square feet of retail space with more than 65 stores and restaurants.
Other retail areas in and/or around the Maple Grove, Minnesota city limits include Main Street, The Grove, and The Fountains at Arbor Lakes. Interestingly, The Fountains at Arbor Lakes include 850,000 square feet of space and “Minnesota’s most energy efficient building, Great River Energy Headquarters.”
Maple Grove, Minnesota isn’t all about its retail spaces, however. The city is also home to Boston Scientific Research, which is a development and manufacturing facility employing over 3,000 locals. Additionally, Maple Grove, Minnesota is home to a 2,000-acre gravel mining area, which is currently owned by Tiller Corporation and C.S. McCrossan. This mining area has been active since all the way back during the 1920s. Maple Grove, Minnesota is also home to the Hindu Temple of Minnesota. According to the Hindu Society of Minnesota, the Hindu Temple of Minnesota is the largest Hindu temple in the entire state of Minnesota.
