Montrose Business Signs

Montrose is a small town located in the southwestern region of the current U.S. state of Colorado.  Prior to settlement by citizens of the United States, this area was inhabited by prehistoric Native American people groups.  In fact, these people left rock art panels at the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site from 1000 BC or earlier until around 1881 AD.  According to Colorado’s Historical Society, these panels “recorded cultural events and were a means of artistic expression.”  Shavano Valley Rock Art Site is listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties and the National Register of Historic Places.

The town of Montrose, Colorado itself was officially incorporated on May 2nd, 1882.  It was named after a novel by Sir Walter Scott, A Legend of Montrose, which in turn was named after a coastal town in Angus, Scotland.  Montrose, Scotland’s name, if one is to believe the local folk etymologists, is derived from ‘Munross’ or ‘Mount of Roses.’  As for Montrose, Colorado – the town soon became an important regional shipping center following the building of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad heading west toward Grand Junction later in 1882.

According to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the small town of Montrose, Colorado has a total population of 19,217 people.  This makes it the most populous municipality found in Montrose County, Colorado.  Interestingly, the town of Montrose also serves as Montrose County’s county seat.

Montrose, Colorado’s largest industry, at least these days, is manufacturing.  Specifically, the town is known as a manufacturing hub for outdoor products.  Fly-fishing companies Ross Reels and Scott Fly Rods have established their headquarters in the area, while Mayfly Outdoors (who owns Ross Reels (among other companies such as Abel Automatics, Inc. and Charlton – all fly-fishing brands) is also active in town.  Montrose, Colorado also has the honor as serving as the home of the headquarters for Gordon Composites, who manufacture “nearly 90% of the high-performance laminate material used in the bow-hunting industry.”  Montrose, Colorado is also home to the Colorado Yurt Company.  As one can guess, the Colorado Yurt Company are “makers of handcrafted yurts, tipis, and rugged canvas wall tents.”

Montrose, Colorado is perhaps most famous for one of its engineering landmarks: Gunnison Tunnel.  Gunnison Tunnel is a 5.8-mile (9.3 km) irrigation tunnel, which was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation from 1905 to 1909.  At that time, it was the longest irrigation tunnel in the world.  In fact, Gunnison Tunnel is still listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places: “the tunnel diverts water from the Gunnison River in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to the arid Uncompahgre Valley around Montrose.”  The canyon, the river, and, subsequently, the tunnel, are all named after Captain John Williams Gunnison, who was the first citizen of the United States to provide an account of the Black Canyon in 1853.  He was killed by Ute Indians.

Montrose, Colorado is home to no notable sports franchises.  It was, however, the birthplace of Dalton Trumbo, a world-famous screenwriter and novelist who scripted such immortal films as Roman Holiday, Exodus, Spartacus, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.  Due to his outsized personality and his resistance to the Hollywood Red Scare, a movie was also even made about him – called, inevitably, Trumbo.
