Nampa, Idaho

Nampa Business Signs

Nampa is a city located in the western region of the present-day U.S. state of Idaho.  Prior to expansion by citizens of the United States, this area was inhabited by the Shoshoni people.  Nampa itself was brought into existence when, during the early 1880s, the Oregon Short Line Railroad built a line from Granger, Wyoming to Huntington, Oregon.  This rail line passed through what would become Nampa, Idaho.  Alexander and Hannah Duffes, along with James McGee, established one of this town’s first homesteads.  Eventually, McGee and the Duffes would co-found the Nampa Land and Improvement Company.

Interestingly, for the first several years of its existence, this town was known as ‘New Jerusalem.’  However, the name was changed to ‘Nampa’, which according to a 1965 article by the Idaho State Historical Society, is a Shoshoni word meaning either ‘moccasin’ or ‘footprint.’  The city of Nampa, Idaho was founded in 1886 and officially incorporated in 1891.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Nampa, Idaho is home to 91,382 people.  This makes it the second-most populous city in Idaho, after Boise.  Interestingly, Nampa is the second principal city of the Boise-Nampa Metropolitan Area, which according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 676,909 people.  This makes it the 83rd most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Additionally, Nampa, Idaho is home to twenty-four parks.  The largest park located within Nampa, Idaho is undoubtedly Lakeview Park.  Nampa, Idaho is also home to the Nampa Recreation Center, which is a 140,000-square-foot facility “containing a six-pool aquatics center, three gymnasiums, racquetball courts, a walking/running track, a weight room, exercise equipment, and a climbing wall.”  Nampa, Idaho also features Centennial and Ridgecrest Golf Clubs.
