Naperville Business Signs
Naperville is a city located in the northeastern most region of the present-day U.S. state of Illinois. Prior to meddling by Europeans, this area was, predictably, inhabited by the Illinois people. In July of 1831 a group of settlers from the United States led by Joseph Naper arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River. Eventually, they created a community here. At first, it was known as Naper’s Settlement, but over time it came to be known as Naperville, Illinois. Naperville, Illinois was officially incorporated into a village in 1857 and then again into a city in 1890.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Naperville, Illinois has a total population of 147,122 people. This makes it the fifth most populous city in the entire state of Illinois. Naperville, Illinois is also considered to be a suburb of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. According to that same 2016 estimate, the city of Chicago has a metropolitan area of 9,512,999 people. This makes it the third largest metropolitan area in the country.
Back in 2010, Bizjournals ran a report “assessing cities with populations exceeding 75,000, Naperville, Illinois was ranked as the wealthiest city in the Midwest and the eleventh wealthiest in the nation.” Additionally, Naperville, Illinois has been ranked among the nation’s safest cities by USA Today and Business Insider. In 2006, Money Magazine voted Naperville, Illinois the second-best place to live in the country, while in 2013 Kiplinger named the city as the best place to retire.
Otherwise, according to Naperville, Illinois’s 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the city’s largest employer is Edward Hospital, responsible for 4,288 jobs. Coming in at second is Nicor, which employs 3,700 people, while Alcatel-Lucent employs 3,600. Naperville, Illinois is also considered part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, which is perhaps why, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city “was one of the ten fastest growing communities in the United States during the 1990s.”
One of Naperville, Illinois greatest attractions is undoubtedly the Naperville Historic District. The Naperville Historic District, which is a set of 613 separate buildings, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is also considered a U.S. Historic District. The Naperville Historic District “represents the town as it was originally platted and a few early additions.”
Elsewhere in the Naperville, Illinois area are three public library locations: The Nichols Library, the Naper Boulevard Library, and the 95th Street Library. Naperville, Illinois is also home to Moser Tower. Back in 1999, the city was designated a White House Millennium Community, due to the construction of Moser Tower, which contains the Millennium Carillon. This bell tower consists of 72 bells, “and is one of only four in the world that spans six octaves.”
Naperville, Illinois also boasts a River Walk, which has often been called the “Crown Jewel” of Naperville. Additionally, the city holds the annual Naperville Independent Film Festival, which, as its name would suggest, is “an annual film festival featuring the work of independent filmmakers.”
