James Robertson and John Donelson, along with a party of Overmountain men, founded the town of Nashville in 1779. It was named after Francis Nash, who was a national hero during the American Revolutionary War. Nashville was later officially incorporated in 1806.
Nashville, according to a 2013 US Census estimate, has a population of 634,464. This makes it the second largest city in the state of Tennessee, after Memphis. The Nashville metropolitan area, which includes 14 counties in the center of the state, has a population of 1,757,912, according to that same 2013 estimate.
