Newport Beach Business Signs

The Tongva and Juaneno/Luiseno peoples inhabited the area, which would become Newport Beach, California, for thousands of years prior to European incursion.  The first European Explorer to visit the coastline of California was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo of Spain in 1542.  It wouldn’t be until 1870, however, when Americans first settled the area.  Captain Samuel S. Dunnells of The Vaquero, a 105-ton steamer, successfully managed to navigate through the lower and upper bay of Newport.  Following this astonishing feat – James Irvine, his brother Robert, and friend James McFadden decided to settle the area.  They agreed to name it “Newport.”  The city of Newport Beach, California was officially incorporated on September the First, 1906.

Today, the city of Newport Beach, California has a population of 87,273 people, according to a 2013 estimate by the US Census Bureau.  Newport Beach, California is also a part of Orange County.  Orange County is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area.  The Greater Los Angeles Area, according to a 2014 estimate, has a population of 18,550,288 people, which makes it the second largest metropolitan area in the country, following the New York metropolitan area.  The Greater Los Angeles Area is one of the largest urban agglomerations in the world.

Newport Beach, California is an affluent area.  In fact, as reported by The Daily Pilot in 2010, “more than a quarter of households [in Newport Beach] have an income greater than $200,000, and the median value for homes exceeds $1 million.”  Newport Beach is often referred to as the most Republican city in the state of California.

Newport Beach also features Newport Center, which is a business, shopping, and entertainment district – often dubbed “Fashion Island” by locals.  Elsewhere in Newport Beach is The Balboa Pavilion.  The Balboa Pavilion, built in 1906 in the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture, is “one of California’s last surviving waterfront recreational pavilions from the turn of the century.”  In fact, according to  The Daily Pilot, The Balboa Pavilion is Newport Beach’s oldest standing building.  It is considered a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Newport Beach, California is world famous as a place for surfing – particularly between Newport Pier and the Santa Ana River.  The Wedge, located at the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, “offers world-class bodyboarding and bodysurfing.”  Indeed, under the right conditions, The Wedge has been known to produce massive waves of up to 30 feet (9.1 meters) in height.

Additionally, Newport Harbor is the largest recreational boat harbor on the U.S. west coast – and as such it is positively brimming with every sort of boat imaginable.  Every year, the Newport Ocean Sailing Association holds the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, which they claim is the largest sailboat race in the world.
