Oklahoma City is a well, city, located right smack dab in the middle of the present-day U.S. state of Oklahoma.  Prior to meddling by citizens of the United States, this area had been inhabited by the “Five Civilized Tribes:” the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole.  In fact, the word ‘Oklahoma’ is derived from the Choctaw phrase ‘okla humma,’ which means ‘red people.’  Sadly, these tribes were forcibly removed by the U.S. government during the 1820s.  As for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma itself, however, this settlement was settled on April 22nd, 1889, “when the area known as the ‘Unassigned Lands’ was opened for settlement in an event known as ‘The Land Run.’”  10,000 settlers arrived in the area as a result.  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was then officially incorporated into a city on July 15th, 1890.

Today, according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma has a total population of 638,367 people.  Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma as well as the state’s most populous city.  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is the 27th most populous city in the country.  As for the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma metropolitan area, according to that same 2015 estimate, it has a population of 1,373,211 people.  This makes it the 41st most populous metropolitan area in the United States of America.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is home to two Fortune 500 companies: Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Devon Energy Corporation.  Additionally, the city is also home to the company ranked thirteenth on Forbes’ list of private companies, Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores.  However, the largest employer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, by a large margin, according to the city’s 2014 Annual Comprehensive Report, is the State of Oklahoma (SEAT), responsible for the employment of 40,000+ people.  The second largest employer in the city of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the United States Federal Aviation Administration, doesn’t even come close, merely employing 5,000+ people.

Speaking of the United States Federal Aviation Administration, one of their offices, the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, within the grounds of Will Rogers Airport.  It is one of the Department of Transportation’s largest facilities outside of the Washington, D.C. area.  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma also serves as the home of Tinker Air Force Base, which is part of Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC).  This air force face was originally named Midwest Air Depot, when it was first built in 1941, but it is now named in honor of Oklahoma native Major General Clarence L. Tinker, who was the first Native American Major General.  Tinker Air Force Base currently garrisons the 72nd Air Base Wing.

As for major sporting franchises, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is home to just one, in the sport of professional basketball.  The NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder play their homes games in the Chesapeake Energy Arena.  They have one title to their names, but they earned it as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979, before moving to Oklahoma City in 2008.
