Passaic is a city located in the northeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of New Jersey.  Prior to invasions perpetrated by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited for hundreds of years by the Munsee-Delaware peoples.  As for the city of Passaic, New Jersey specifically, it was first founded as a Dutch settlement along the Passaic River, which was established in 1679.  At first, it was dubbed ‘Acquackanonk,’ though the name was soon changed to Passaic, which means ‘valley’ or ‘place where the land splits’ in the Lenape language.  The city of Passaic, New Jersey was officially incorporated on April 2nd, 1873.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Passaic, New Jersey has a total population of 70,635 people.  This makes Passaic the 15th most populous city in the entire state of New Jersey.  Interestingly, this also makes the city of Passaic, New Jersey “the tenth most densely populated municipality in the entire United States of America.”

Traditionally, the city of Passaic, New Jersey has been known, at least economically, for its textile and metalworking related industries and exports.  This was true throughout much of the 19th century.  Today, however, Passaic, New Jersey is home to several business districts.  Passaic, New Jersey’s business districts include Main Avenue, Broadway, and Main Street.  Main Street boasts a plethora of shopping experiences, “restaurants and businesses reflecting the city’s Latino and Eastern European populations.”

Additionally, portions of the city of Passaic, New Jersey are part of what is known as an Urban Enterprise Zone.  Passaic, New Jersey’s own Urban Enterprise Zone, which was created in August of 1994, provides benefits to encourage employment within the Zone.  On top of these benefits, Passaic, New Jersey’s Urban Enterprise Zone allows “shoppers to take advantage of a reduced 3.4375% sales tax rate (half of the 6.875% rate charged statewide) at eligible merchants.”

The city of Passaic, New Jersey is served by two separate regional newspapers.  These separate regional newspapers are The Record and Herald News, “which are both owned by Gannett company and predecessor North Jersey media Group.”

Beyond journalism, the city of Passaic, New Jersey is home to several houses of worship.  These houses of worship include, but are certainly not limited to, St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church (which was built between 1959 and 1960), St. John’s Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian of Passaic, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and Passaic Park, which is a residential and institutional center of Orthodox Judaism.

The city of Passaic, New Jersey is also home to several institutions of education.  These educational institutions include, but are certainly not limited to, the Passaic City School District, Passaic County Community College, St. Nichols Ukrainian Catholic School, the Collegiate School, Yeshiva Gedola of Passaic, and Noble Leadership Academy.

Passaic, New Jersey is also home to St. Mary’s General Hospital.  St. Mary’s General Hospital “is an acute care hospital offering a broad range of health care services and community outreach programs.”  St. Mary’s General Hospital, which was founded all the way back in 1895, now provides 287 beds.
