Pembroke Pines is a city located on the southeastern portion of the present-day state of Florida’s protuberance. Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by various native groups for four thousand years and then subsequently inhabited by the Tequesta peoples for two thousand years. Due to a combination of Spanish biological warfare and conflict with the neighboring Calusa during the 16th century, the Tequesta were soon to disappear forever. This area was then taken over by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Confederate States of America, then the United States yet again.
Pembroke Pines, Florida itself first began as a farm owned by Sir Edward Reed, a Member of Britain’s Parliament for the County of Pembroke, who bought land in the area in 1874. The road built along this land came to be known as Pembroke Road. Prior to official incorporation, Pembroke Pines, Florida’s (then) Mayor Dr. Kipnis “suggested the name Pembroke Pines due to the pine trees growing along” this prominent road. Interestingly, the word ‘Pembroke’ itself means, in Welsh, ‘land’s end’. Pembroke Pines, Florida wouldn’t even be unofficially incorporated into a village until March 2nd, 1959. The town was only officially incorporated into a village on January 16th, 1960. Pembroke Pines, Florida was officially incorporated into a city on May 22nd, 1961.
According to a 2010 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, Pembroke Pines, Florida has a total population of 154,750 people. Pembroke Pines, Florida is also considered a principal city in the Miami metropolitan area. According to a 2015 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the Miami metropolitan area has a total population of 6,012,331 people. Pembroke Pines, Florida’s official motto is “Join Us – Progress With Us.” In 2014, WalletHub named Pembroke Pines, Florida the “Best City for Hispanic Entrepreneurs” while Money Magazine ranked the city as #32 in its top 50 “Best Places to Live.” Perhaps this is due to Pembroke Pines, Florida’s “28 superior parks and lush landscaping throughout” its many diverse neighborhoods. Pembroke Pines, Florida has also been recognized as an “All-America City.”
According to a State Farm Insurance report from 2001, the city was home to the most dangerous road intersection in the United States – Pines Boulevard and Flamingo Road. To their credit, Pembroke Pines, Florida’s residents passed a bond initiative which allowed the city to redesign the intersection, expanding it with additional east/west Pines Boulevard lanes.

In fact, the city is home to Florida Career College Pembroke Pines Campus, the Broward-Pines Center regional campus of Barry University, the Broward-Pines Center regional campus of Broward College, the Broward-Pines Center regional campus of Florida International University, the South regional campus of Broward College, and Keiser University Pembroke Pines Campus.
