Rochester, Minnesota

Rochester Business Signs

The city of Rochester is located in the southeast region of the state of Minnesota.  Prior to United States meddling, this area was home to the Hopewell and Mississippian peoples, who settled in areas along rivers for hundreds of years prior to European exploration.  Other native peoples inhabiting the region included the Dakota.  The city of Rochester, Minnesota itself was founded in 1854.  It originally developed as a stagecoach stop between Saint Paul, Minnesota and Dubuque, Iowa.  The railroads arrived in the 1860s and the town truly began to boom.

Rochester, Minnesota was named after the city of Rochester, New York.  Rochester, New York was itself named after its founder Nathaniel Rochester, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War and later a land speculator.  As for Rochester, Minnesota, one of its most famous residents, Dr. William W. Mayo, arrived in 1863.  Dr. Mayo served as the examining surgeon for draftees during the American Civil War.  He would leave an indelible mark on the city and its economy.

Today, according to a 2015 report by the US Census Bureau, Rochester, Minnesota has a total population of 112,225 people.  This makes it the 250th most populous city in the US and the 3rd most populous city in the state of Minnesota.  In fact, Rochester is the largest city in Minnesota outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area.  As for the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area, it has a total population of 213,873 people, according to a 2014 estimate.  This makes it the 206th most populous metropolitan statistical area in the country.

Rochester, Minnesota’s economy is dominated by the Mayo Clinic.  According to a recent Rochester, Minnesota City Comprehensive Report, the Mayo Clinic is the largest employer in the city.  The Mayo Clinic is responsible for 36,505 jobs.  The second largest employer in the city, IBM, doesn’t even compare.  IBM has a mere 2,201 employees in the city.  The Mayo Clinic not only has a large number of staff, but it also brings people in to the city at large as well.  Annually, 2 million people visit the city of Rochester, Minnesota because of the Mayo Clinic.  The Mayo Clinic had 1,318,300 different patients in 2015.

The Mayo Clinic was founded by Dr. William W. Mayo in 1863.  It has a heavy presence in Rochester, Minnesota, but it also has major campuses in Arizona and Florida.  According to the U.S. News & World Report in 2016-2017, the Mayo Clinic’s Rochester, Minnesota campus is listed as the #1 overall hospital in the United States.  (1 of 5,000 hospitals!)

One of the buildings on the Mayo Clinic campus is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark.  The Plummer Building, which opened in 1927, contains a bell tower.  Elsewhere in Rochester, Minnesota, Chateau Dodge Theatre is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  Chateau Dodge Theatre opened on October 26th, 1927, and was built in the French chateau architectural style.  Avalon Hotel, or Avalon Music as it is now known, is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  The old hotel opened in 1919 as the Northwestern Hotel.

Rochester, Minnesota is home to three sports teams.  Northern Elie Football League’s Rochester Giants play at Rochester Regional Stadium.  MnJHL’s ice hockey Rochester Ice Hawks play their home matches in Rochester Recreation Center.  Northwoods League Baseball’s Rochester Honkers play their home games at Mayo Field.  The Honkers have five league championships to their names.
